I don't like how everything is drab. Probably won't play it.

I'm actually kind of a fan of that, it seems like lately all my favorite ARPGs have been so colorful (mostly borderlands and torchlight). I might just get it for a change of scenery. It also reminds me of the darker side of diablo 2 which I felt was completely lacking in the 3 and well, most of its other clones.

It's a post-apocalyptic steam punk with some magic setting, poppy bright colors would be kind of out of placesmoth wrote:I don't like how everything is drab. Probably won't play it.
Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
I'm not certain I agree, bright colours persist in most unsavoury environments.
Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
It isn't about "poppy bright" it is about the world having lots of bright color in it. This is an imbalance.rattle wrote:It's a post-apocalyptic steam punk with some magic setting, poppy bright colors would be kind of out of placesmoth wrote:I don't like how everything is drab. They use contrast to make it "dark"
but everything is "dark" so the effect is quickly lost.
the character, the thing you see the most is always greyish. I don't like that. There should be some other possibilities for effects and colors beyond grey.
if you look at the d2 armors they have splashes of color to them so you character stands out in the grey background.

then again I always did topaz armor.
but still, they have more color in the enviroment than your guy. Will you take grey, or grey mr poe
Yet we have like 90% of fps games come in grey and brown with little actual color. Dota 2 has more color than this and they run a fog overlay on most things.Funkencool wrote:I'm actually kind of a fan of that, it seems like lately all my favorite ARPGs have been so colorful (mostly borderlands and torchlight). Bah, it's just a matter of setting your monitor properly.

Look how spring-like!

Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
Not always true but I had the exact same thing with a game called "Dead Nation" for PS3 (it was free)... it was all dark and moody and hard to make anything out from the background... so I went into the game's brightness and contrast sliders and put them both at the top... suddenly the game was cartoony and I could distinguish everything from everything else.zwzsg wrote:Bah, it's just a matter of setting your monitor properly.

It's super gloomy and a good HnS.

Ah, I remember seeing that mentioned but completely forgot about it. I will definitely be trying that out soon enough.
Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
you can also try titan quest if you want an rpg that has the color and vibrancy of oatmeal.

Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
Path of exile is only for hardcore players. It has a ridiculously hard xp loss death system, and if you happen to put points into the wrong stats, you have a very tiny amount of respec points but generally you have to start over from scratch.
It's a fun game, but the xp loss on death and the lack of respec makes it a very shitty game.

Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
yeah the neckbeard retards essentially bitched until the devs made it punishing for all but the most committed players
Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
Path of Exile only has XP loss on the higher difficulty settings. If you play on normal difficulty, there's no loss. But otherwise yeah, the skill & gear system of PoE is pretty hardcore.
I'm still having fun playing alone in a casual way though.
As for Titan Quest, it's much older, but rumored to be an good game, and also, the selling point of Grim Dawn is that it was made by the same people.

Normal is too easy because you outlevel it. Causing you to have to start over to get a challenge again.

Titan Quest is boring.
If this game is gonna be a new Titan Quest it will suck hard.

Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
A couple of thousand people seem to disagree... it takes TQs gameplay and extends upon it in every way. Grim Dawn is supposed to fix the little bad things about TQ altogether. I didn't like the setting of TQ much nor the bloody blooming but the gameplay and class system was pretty good.
I know you all seem to like PoE a lot because of it's diverse class(less) system but I think you've got more options in TQ/GD because PoE eventually revolves around getting as many HP nodes with the essential overpowered special nodes or shield nodes if you play CI. The remainder of your character is made up by the amount of correctly chained links on your equipment and skill gems that you find. That kind of makes it very limited if you want to get anywhere in higher difficulties in my book.
So smoth if I get your point right you would like to see a diverser color spreadout or better lighting on your main character...

kind of like this?
It'd be nice if game developers would offer you post processing shaders that allowed you to alter the look of a game to your likes.

Re: Grim Dawn Alpha!
I have no problem with a lot of grey.
My problem is with classic hack and slash games in general.
Usually there is no other goal in the game but leveling up...
That is the main objective and you do it for it's own sake...
You grind to level up, to be able to grind and kill stronger monsters and than the game ends.
The monsters are usually just mindless cones walking at you or shooting you with a projectile from where they stand.
There is usually minimum interaction with the world except the occasional havoc backed barrel explosions.
It is all about tweaking the character and maybe a bit of unbalanced deathmatch pvp...
TBH I could never finish games like Diablo or Titan quest cause after you are done with 60% of the game you just cant take the grind any more..
Its too mind numbing.
Let me interact with the world in novel ways..
Let's have some sort of living world AI..
Let's have random level generation, let's have random skill trees, Let's allow you to not only have the skill trees to be a one man army but also have skills that allow you to command big groups of forces using formations or allow you to be mayor of a city or a lord in command of forces and territory to manage...
an ascension from peasant to king...Whatever as long as it is not about spending days and days killing the same monsters with higher and higher armor to get a better sword rinse and repeat...
If my goal is to have the ultimate grind fest I can go play a korean MMO...
the RPG/FPS genres have melded already can't we have a hack and slash/managing game meld? or a hack and slash/RTS meld?
It is so sad to see the same thing done over and over and over with the only thing different being the graphics...
Even sadder is to see people cheering for these game...
Is torchlight 2 not grind enough?Diablo 3? They are basically the exact same games with different graphics...
