Max slope hovercrafts?

Post by qray »

Hi,

after playing a bit around with hovercrafts, I noticed that the maxslope is handled strange. For example:
The ARM Pincer (amphibious tank) can climb much steeper slopes than the ARM Wombat (hovercraft), though the Wombat has a maxslope of 16 and the Pincer of 15 (tested on several ramps on TabulaV2). Same is true for 2nd level amphibious Triton, which has a maxslope of 12.

Am I misunderstanding the meaning of maxslope or is this a bug?
IMHO, it would be cool, if hovercrafts would get more useful even on land maps for their movement abilities (speed+slope).

And just an idea: would be cool, if the Com could build hovercraft factories, so you could start right away using them. But that might mess up balance on water maps...

Cheers,
ray.

The maxslope in the unitdef is the max slope a unit can be built on. The max slope a unit can pass is defined in movedefs.

But as we as we are on the subject anyway... Isn┬┤t the reason why hovers and amphs have such insane slope capabilities only because they need to be able to get out of the water, and that is where that capability is needed? Because they need the cope with such slopes also causes them to have insane mountaineering capabilities...

Do you guys agree that side effect should not occur and is there a way to change this situation?

I think this climbing ability gives them a nice strategic role - also in non-water games. That hovers are a bit worse than amphibious tanks seems realistic.
And since bots can climb as good (or better), it doesn't screw up gameplay (you have to build defences at these points anyway...).

edit: BTW: hovers don't have insane slope capabilities...
