Spring crashes after "Finalize"

Post by Beachboy »

Hi All,

well, hello everybody.
As a newbie in spring, I hope you can help with my problem.

Spring crashes right after it said "Finalizing".
In the syslog the folloing is seen:
Dec 7 20:34:31 guenter-desktop kernel: [ 4196.409252] [drm:r100_cs_track_check] *ERROR* [drm] No buffer for z buffer !
Dec 7 20:34:31 guenter-desktop kernel: [ 4196.409261] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Invalid command stream !
My Grafik Card is a quite old ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.
Any chance to get it to work?

Spring is version 0.82.6.1
OS is Ubuntu 10.04
lsomd shows: drm 162409 5 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
(Dont know if this is important)
Kernel is 2.6.32-26

What else do you need?

Sorry, if information is missing, I am new to spring and
do not yet know, what to look at.

Best regards,

Guenter (AKA: Beachboy, Sindalan)

Hi All,

well, obviously, my card was quite old.
I had to follow the following instruction, now it works.
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Grafikkarten ... -mit-fglrx

Thanks for all your great work, Spring rocks...

Hello All,

well I was able to play the map Altored_Devide,
but any other map so far crashed.
The error message has change though:
Dec 8 23:11:01 guenter-desktop kernel: [ 1608.152380] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -12!
Any idea what to do?
Or where to look at to fix this?

Thanks for your help in advance.

By the way, occasionally Altored-Devide is crashing as well,
have not found out what the variables are that it does not crash.

Best regards,

did you try to install the fglrx-module?

afaik is radeon the default driver and does only partly support 3D/opengl.
maybe install fglrx:

sudo apt-get install fglrx

should do that (and hopefully break not your system...)

this part could help too:

Hello Abma,

thanks for your reply.
I installed the alternative ATI driver, but did not yet
try to fglrx.

I will try this evening and read through the other link.

Hello Abma,

just to provide an update:
With the fglrx driver the start button does not have any effect.
My grafics card is not on the list of supported devices...

driconfig also seems not to have an effect.

I might get a cheap new card, since I already have spend quite some time
to figure out what is going on.

Do you have a tip, which one to get?

to play spring, an nvidia-card is better than an ati card, because the opengl-drivers of ati have many bugs :-/ which one you should buy, i can't say. the best would be to check some test-sites/comparisons, maybe an other user can give some hints...

Anything nVidia > anything ATI. Why? Because nVidia is capable of creating non fail drivers that add new features to even old video cards.

That and, ATI fails. WTF did amd have to go and throw in with ati? That's sucks. Awesome proc manufacturer throws in with uber shitty gfx manufacturer. :-/
