Forged alliance top player now on TA, how to learn the game?

Post by _Remmy_ »

Basically. I've been playing Forged alliance for the past 3 years, and it's safe to say i'm one of the top players of the game. I'm currently #1 on the ladder, and am looking for a new challenge. The reason i've chosen this, is that it is actually very similar. Obviously, there are a lot of different things under the hood, but I think it will be a swift transition from FA to BA.

Now, what I want help with is:
-Learning the basics of the game (it's been 11 years since i've played, and I was only 5 then. Do the math, yes, i'm 16.)
-General spring stuff. I've been a moderator over the GPG forums, as well as GPGnet for a couple of years now. I'd like to do the same with spring, obviously I realise I can't just turn up, say hai and expect to be made a moderator.
-If there's a teamspeak/Ventrilo/Skype meeting place where a lot of nice guys hang out, that would be ideal for me, I love to chat with people, and I feel that it would help my game a lot.

Anyway, if there's anyone willing to take me under their wing, that would be awesome.

Welcome _Remmy_

I really think that you made right choice joining here from Supcom
that game sucks compared to how deep and complex *A mods here can get.

Perhaps you want to start against AI opponents just to get familiar with the gameplay, physics and all other stuff relating. As you have lot of experience on TA and FA, I don't see this being an big obstacle. After that feel free to hop in to some BA games for instance (XTA, SA, CA are very good mods also, just pick the one you like most). I suggest you not to play DeltasiegeDry 8v8 if you are seeking challenge and competition. 1v1 - 3v3 would suit for that purpouse best. Also FFA's are great.

There is teamspeak/ventrilo servers for spring games, Cant however remember what those were.

*cough* And try to apply to the best clan in spring, to [PinK] of course *cough*

You need to get a free program called Mumble http://mumble.sourceforge.net/.
It's spring's teamspeak equivalent.
In mumble for address put "springrts.com".
for port put "64738" - that's the default for mumble.
You need to than find a person nicknamed "Stoompeh" and talk to him, hell be your guide and master.
He usually hangs out in the SIN XTA or ROX channels.

BA is not TA.

If you want to play TA, you still can, but it's not the right place. Last time I heard, the last remaining TA players were at www.PhoenixWorx.org or on the WarZone client. Try looking around here: http://tazone.tauniverse.com/

The website looks dead, but their forum seem alive: http://tazone.proboards41.com/index.cgi

I switched to Spring from Forged Alliance aswell mostly because of how much better unit control there is in Spring.
Line Draw commands blew my mind. Now you can actually make useful formations in any shape you like.
The widget Custom Formations 2 is a must.

Also the way spring checks if its target is in Line of Fire is great. It even checks for freindly units if the weapon can collide with freindlies!!!
Also... units on hold position given a fight command will only engage enemy units in Line of Fire. This means that you can move units through bumpy terrain and they will target units at max range that arent behind hills and such.

Terrain is of big strategical and tactical importance. In FA it was pretty much passable and nonpassable terrain. Here different units have different slope tolerance which means going kbots or tanks depends alot on the map. Height advantage includes that units take longer time to go up on hills and that some units get longer range on high terrain.

Different games in Spring have different gameplay:
BA is propably the mod which got the most gameplay options since of a strong metal maker economy while some maps have their related strategies mapped out.
CA is the mod that have streamlined the economy and focus more on balancing units according to their strength, weakness and not on their accessebility. No tech tree. Propably the most micro intensive game on spring. A stationary unit is a dead unit.

The mods i play mostly are quite differentiated:
NOTA plays more like FA than other mods. You need a standing army, good unit combos that counter the enemies units and the metal maker economy is weak. Air is strong and ships dominate sea maps. No commander though.

Spring1944
WW2 game where you cant expand your economy other than capturing flags on metal patches. Involves alot of special features such as supplies in order for units to fire, suppresion, directional armor and other. Spring 1944 is the main reason I started playing Spring.

Kernel Panic
No resources but time. Positioning, getting the right units at the right time and unit reenforcing is critical in mastering this at first sight, simple game. Makes for short and hectic games.

I like giving advice on Mumble with voice communication and I'll be happy to learn you S44, NOTA or KP.

Welcome and enjoy your stay. As most here will tell you, Spring > FA *list goes here* 8)

However, be warned, Spring does have a very small community and as such it has little to no competitive community. There are lots of very very skilled players out there who will most surely play with you if you ask, but don't expect organized competition. There are occasional "tournies" which are spur-of-the-moment, usually 1v1, and only 10-30 people join, and it's done in a day or two.

You're more than welcome to start some yourself or help liven up the competitive side of things (would be a great thing for spring), and if you enjoy it maybe you can convince some FA people to move over to the light side. :p

Naturally Spring players think Spring is better. You'll pick it up very fast, im sure.

If you want to learn CA, PM me in lobby. I am the guy with the big gold star next to his name who isnt an autohost. You've come a bit too late for the true era of 1v1 BA glory, when we had some of the better TA players who had been playing for a decade, now its mostly 8v8 DSD...

One of the advantages of Spring is that it is free and open source. Its playerbase isnt limited to the lifetime of the sales of a commercial product. This is more an advantage to modders though, since they can distribute their work for free to anyone who will take it, not a closed community of people who have already purchased another game. The playerbase, though, just tends to muddle on along.

Welcome. You may want to check out XTA if you're looking for semi-organized competition in a *A mod.

I strongly encourage you to look into Kernel Panic or Spring 1944 after you've familiarized yourself with the less radical structure of BA and the other TA derivatives.

Welcome Remmy.
Everyone will try to trap you in his mod (for me it is BA :D) so you should just try.
The main difference with other game is that you can make very complexe strategy and that the aswomness of the engine/widget allow you to actually control everything simultenaeously: the point is that you will need some time to configure all yours widget, keybind, and also to memorize the stats of all the units ofc.

One important thing for you I think, if you like the challenge, you will get some. Lot of players play this game for a lot of years (and never switch back to any other RTS) and know a lot about it.
Also, dont thrust what all poeple say here :D, jsut play and you will definitly be trapped !
