Ashnal wrote:jj, I think you should just host the main site, and leave the file hosting to the mirrors. Just remove jobjol from the mirrors list ^_^ I use the darkstars mirror from the jj page most of the time anyways because AFs server sends me maps much faster.
I fidn the darkstars service I get from my filehost is reliable but the speeds vary depending on the ISP and location. I don't trust my home internet to give me speeds indicative of how fast it is since my home connection is erratic enough as it is.

However the JJ mirror is hosted in plain FTP land and should be marginally faster than my filehost as it is not buffered through php.

Yeah speeds depend on location, for me JJ is faster than AF's site and evolution rts site often crawls at below 30k/s

Have you tried opening more than one stream at a time? I opened 50 streams at one time and the server didn't complain at all. Tbh it bugs the hell out of me, but it just depends on your location. The other night I dl'd something off the server and got 600kbps the entire time. Go figure I guess.

The problem returns.
Bandwidth is all eaten up, hosting bills are paid.
But the donations are almost 50% of the costs.
This means i'm paying almost 50% of the hosting costs for SpringFiles in the past few years.

I want to ask you to give a (little) amount for SpringFiles to cover the hosting costs.

In the meantime i will do everything to provide availability and smoothness in providing all the maps, mods, etc. @ Springfiles.com

12 Euros is enough to provide a whole month of hosting all the spring resources to the spring community.

Thank You!

I just got to this thread, what is bandwidth in and out for the site?

edit: reason i ask is why not throw less-popular files on S3, let AWS handle them, only keep most popular files on the server... or maybe other way around, not sure. depends on numbers

gimme numbers plox

But the most popular files sure are those who eat the most bandwidth! Kill BA & DSD!

I've said it before, just stop having springfiles serve the files when bandwidth gets low and dump it on the mirrors.

That doesn't solve the problem of cost, but at least it would solve overages.

The option of the darkstars mirror has always been available. All he needs to do is ask for the new password. Basically JJ has the resources to do what needs to be done, and cant be arsed making the changes suggested above.

There is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, stopping JJ from hosting files on his site internally, and syncing them with mirrors, and only serving the frontend from his site, instead of allowing downloads which eat all his bandwidth.

Heck that suggestion has been floating around for years now, and has in the past been endorsed by JJ, and so has the second suggestion of allowing mirrors to have html indexes, to which JJ has been cryptic and contradictory on. AKA JJ wants full and total control over the mirrors, but at the same time its our responsibility to generate the indexes using data that only he has, and refuses to give out, and that we're to do so using mirrors that he has already demanded full control of?

This is basically an architecture of control. JJ is being political and self serving. Moving all hosting to mirrors, and adding indexes would mean his central index is no longer required for anything more than uploads.

JJ has the capacity to reduce his bandwidth load dramatically, and thus stop spending the extra money for the extra bandwidth, and the money needed for when he goes over. If he wanted he could manage on a cheap shared host and still have a superfast site, and rely on his file mirrors to shift the files.

I barely ever download anything from springfiles.com, i usually use vsync.de mirror or other mirrors... thats why im quite surprised its still taking too much bandwidth, hes been hiding the springfiles.com download link for a quite a while (has like 10 sec delay in worst case)

SpringFiles never has problems with too much bandwidth usage because of that delay.

I like the idea to stop hosting some of the files at Springfiles since there are enough mirrors available.

It would reduce the hosting costs by 50%.

There is also still option to host springfiles on main spring server, it already serves as one of mirror and it's not going to have problems with space or traffic with 2TB disks and 3tb traffic at 100mbit speed/month.

I support this. Plus, we wouldn't have to worry about it ever disappearing.

I'm happy that jj has donated time and resources but like many comments here I wonder whether it's really that necessary.

This sounds like a job for a load balancer. If there really are plenty of willing mirrors it should be a trivial affair to create the appropriate redirects.

With a little more work you could even make it geographically aware so the closest mirror is chosen automatically.

Has anyone ever checked what Sourceforge's position on hosting game content is? Since most of the content is open source / CC / PD and does contain source code relevant to the engine could we not simply wrap the top 20 maps and top 5 mods in contents packs and host them there (updating with each release)? How about via github (with a git-based installer)?

There is no problem with hosting capacity of mirrors.

The mirrors are actually swimming in an ocean of unused bandwidth.

I suggest the following system. Convert Springfiles into backup storage for files partly. Files itself should be downloaded via p2p system (it correlates with SD, you can team-up). Springfiles enables direct file download when there are too less seeders per entry. So, Springfiles needs a tracker or some sync functional with current SD (or whatever) tracker.

Eh? SD/SL USE SpringFiles/mirrors!
Its all same system!
It always was.

http://planet-wars.eu/PlasmaServer keeps track of mirrors and metadata for this sytem.

SD/SL is NOT p2p!
