If you have 0 experience coding, and want to see results of your coding right in a game, try Colobot...
Its not RTS, but it is specially made for newbies who want to start coding with visual results.
Engines arent newbie-friendly... I havent seen one that is.
Is Spring for me?

You don't need to plaster the map in units, just use inert features and swap them for Gaia units where necessary, it would be far faster
Right now you won't get what you want out of the box here, we have everything necessary to build what you want, but you would havebto build it.
We've seen a number of people do the illogical thing of deciding:
"because spring only has 60% of what I wanted and the tools to do the rest, Im going to go use an engine which only has 5% of what I need and introduce major design changes into my plans because the other 95% isn't totally possible"
For these things some work in scripting or code is going to be necessary. The people here will help you along if you show respect and make real progress. They want you to succeed in your efforts

Re: Is Spring for me?
I would like to say it is always refreshing to see a newcomer who has the right attitude.
Tor, I believe you could achieve a lot of what you want because your approach is careful and calculated and you're asking all the right questions. Please log on to the multiplayer lobby and join channels #moddev, #lua and #ca where we can answer your modding questions in real time.
The absolute worst case scenario is you won't achieve an exact version of your game but at least you'll find some fun games to play and inspire you further.

Yes. Unfortunately the SD lobby is only for windows -- but there are other options for lobbies (if not quite as shiny)zwzsg wrote:Isn't Spring cross-platform too?on the other side cross-platform
Regardless, good luck on your project, Tor.

I think i┬┤ll stick around
Hopefully down the line something will materialize and I┬┤ll will be able to give something back to the Spring project.

Re: Is Spring for me?
From my experience, open source = user unfriendly. Sorry.
However, strictly speaking, there are little or no limitations on what is possible with spring... Just most of the fun things aren't very easy.
My advice, get more smarter.

There are certain commonly requested things that are much easier than they first appear, they just haven't been done yet
