I really think the one of left is radical. the middle one looks like it could be a bit... uh thicker under the body as it looks like there is no room for a power plant. Anyway blows the crap out of my models good job.

Painting Hard Surfaces Tutorial

I tend to do that, and just generally add detail as I go. Having concept art or reference imagery is always a good plus. I use layer styles and pictures of real life metal etc as a base; check around CGTextures for those, especially using them as overlays to add surface detail.

Regarding pre-lighting, I find it better to use a layer set to Colour Dodge in photoshop (you will probably need to fiddle the opacity; the effect can be pretty strong), as it retains colour information and just looks better than using the dodge/stroke tools in my opinion. An AO map bake will basically precalculate shadows for you, always a good plan, and with dirt and such, try to keep in the parts of the unit that will be in contact with the ground most of the time, ie tank tracks or mech feet. Try not to draw on reflective/specular details yourself; let the specular map handle that.

This pdf file on texture creation is also a useful read.

Very Cool though those rotors look pointless.
Hope you make all the hovers in this style.

Not bad, you only have some beginner errors with meshflow. You know, if you upload the .obj I could fix it for you.

The design is well done :-)

It looks great in a picture like that but how will the turrets turn? Both because they're separete and that the back motor blocks them from shooting straight backwards
