Help a n00b with new install issues

Post by trideceth12 »

Hello, please help me.. I am trying but this is hard.

I am trying to get Spring Engine running on my PC, specs:

AMD Athlon X2 245 2.9GHz
Nvidia GTX260
Ubuntu 9.10

I downloaded the following from the repositories using synaptic:
spring 0.78.1.1ubuntu1~8.10~ppa1
spring-engine 0.80.5-0ubuntu2
spring-installer 20090119-0ubuntu1~8.10~ppa1
springlobby 0.23-0ubuntu1

I also followed a tutorial and installed Spring Downloader 2.0.12.0
I downloaded ca:stable using Spring Downloader

Issues:
1.
When I try to connect to the server in springlobby I get the following error:

"No compatible installed spring version has been found, this server requires 0.81.2
Your current installed version are: 0.80.5
Online play is currently disabled"

2.
When I open a single player game using springlobby many fuctions seem missing (such as the commander's build menu)

3.
When I open a game by running spring directly, the functions are there but after five minutes or so, maybe less, spring crashes and I get the error:

Segmentation fault (SIGSEGV)

i really want to play this game please please help

Did you try following the Ubuntu specific directions on the download page?

http://springrts.com/wiki/Ubuntu_install
Super easy Ubuntu 9.10 Installation Instructions wrote:Go to Applications->Ubuntu Software Center, search for springlobby, and click go.
Cause based on what you wrote:
I downloaded the following from the repositories using synaptic:
spring 0.78.1.1ubuntu1~8.10~ppa1
spring-engine 0.80.5-0ubuntu2
spring-installer 20090119-0ubuntu1~8.10~ppa1
springlobby 0.23-0ubuntu1
It sounds like you downloaded and installed an outdated version... and even worse you installed the Ubuntu 8.10 compatible build of an outdated version.

Ah yes... I did manage to update to the latest version.

I had a few different sources for spring in the software sources... deleted them all and stared again as per the instructions (ppa:spring/ppa)

... and updated spring-engine and springlobby to Latest versions!! yay!

everything works fine now.

Sorry for being such a n00b

P.S. the "spring" package (which claims to be a "metapackage"???) is still the one which is potentially intended for 8.10... what does this package do? is this a problem?

Thanks
