Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
Hello, I'm making this post since I'm wondering if it's ok (licensing wise) if I were to create a "trailer" of sorts with custom music and sound effects for my portfolio website (I'm a music major at Ohio State). Since it's open source I'm not sure why there would be an issue, but I'm just checking. It won't be sold in any manner.
Also, I have almost 0 experience in movie editing so if anyone wants to jump on the bandwagon any help would be greatly appreciated. You will, of course, be able to use and distribute the video freely. Thanks all!

First I must mention spring is not a game but an engine, so spring itself has no content to license! Well none that you can visibly see in world aside from procedural trees.
Instead I sugegst you choose a game that runs under the spring engine. If you make an arbitrary trailer for all of the engine, then you might be criticized for being incoherent.
If you instead choose to use BA/NOTA/CA/etc, then you are wading into the murky waters of Atari IP and your work becomes legally questionable.
(That and we already have tonnes of BA trailers, and any nonBA trailers are either CA, P.U.R.E, or a mishmash of everything else that does little good, kernel panic has some videos though)

Do one for Spring 1944! No IP conflicts! Pretty units/sfx! Epic WWII setting!

More seriously, we're about to head into a release season (next month or two) so if you were to make a 'trailer' featuring your music and our game, it would get as much airtime as we can manage while promoting the game (last major trailer got ~35,000 views on youtube).

Ah 1944 sounds like a great idea. I'll take a look into that. Thanks for the info!
Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
CA is mostly IP free, especially if you do it with 1faction, so there is always that.
Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
The only issue with s44 is that from a gameplay view you cant see anything, and from a cinematic view the units look low res (not to put anyone down, its also an excellent realistic mod, since most people i know are rather shady low res characters.)
Just as something more unique, i highly recommend the game called "The Cursed" just because its a new game with fascinating new artwork. You may want to get permission from a user called Azaremoth (hope I spelled that right) in order to use that content. I think this video would then have the added benefit of inspiring some hype about a pretty new game that doesnt seem to have much hold on the game playing part of the community yet, despite its refreshing and unique content and gameplay elements.

Thanks for the advice d_b . I shall examine my options most carefully. Though I do think that a WWII game would be easiest to compose for, I'm still mostly deciding.
Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
im just curious what kind of music you could make for cursed.
If you can make them into sections that flow into eachother, ill put together a dynamic music system that adds your music to the background and changes the track based on current battle events (like dopey theme, action theme, anticipation theme, victory etc.)

I would love to see a trailer that promotes the cursed! I guess there is a hughe spectrum of music that could fit the theme...

It would be really nice to have a trailer of Evolution RTS, but you would need to grab the svn version for it tbh.
Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
no offence but the cursed looks way cooler.

Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
I'd be open to almost anything as long as it has a good video to go along with it. Nobody has contacted me or given me contact info yet so...

now if only people played it onlined_b wrote:no offence but the cursed looks way cooler.
Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
This confuses me. Are you offering to shoot a video, or asking someone else to make you a video?Pwnedbyryan wrote:I'd be open to almost anything as long as it has a good video
So you are not counting azaremoth and Forboding Angel replies? Why? Do only email count?Pwnedbyryan wrote:Nobody has contacted me or given me contact info yet so...

Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
I'm willing to help shoot the video, but having someone else help would be greatly appreciated. (as I stated before I have little experience in that dept.). I've sent emails to 1944 mod (no response) and since then posted my contact information to see if anyone would simply contact me. This collaboration will take a little more than a reply on this thread!zwzsg wrote:This confuses me. Ah, see, I think we were thinking less on the lines of "collaboration" and more on the lines of you looking for suggestions on which mods to use and answering your questions on licensing.Pwnedbyryan wrote:I'm willing to help shoot the video, but having someone else help would be greatly appreciated. I do see you mentioned the part about wanting help:
but that request is a little nebulous as to what you were looking for.Pwnedbyryan wrote:Also, I have almost 0 experience in movie editing so if anyone wants to jump on the bandwagon any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry, that's not me.
Re: Spring promotion video & custom music/sfx
Are you open to the idea of making video for a mod with such graphism?
Because as the video comment says, with it, assuming you used my installer, shooting a video would then becomes a matter of clicking "skirmish" and "spectate", press Ctrl+Shift+f10, and go grab popcorn. No need to actually direct the troops, place the camera, know how to hide the GUI or use smooth camera mode. It's all auto.
