CA's Open Sound initiative

Post by Saktoth »

CA, particularly in the effort towards 1faction, is currently attempting to replace all its OTA sounds with new, open source ones.

As a part of this effort we'll be cataloguing, uploading, marking with licences on and assigning a bunch of sounds.

Here is the SVN for all ours sounds currently in the game archive. They are categorised into folders according to where they are from- the licences depend on where they came from, mostly GPL and PD (this needs clarification). The ones in the base directory are uncategorized and of unknown provedence, help categorizing those is appreciated. The OTA sounds are listed there, but as you can see we have a lot of non-OTA sounds.

In the source section of the SVN, there are also uploads of all the sounds from Golgotha and AstroMenace, both GPL (more forthcoming).

A page for detail, discussion, etc on the open sound initiative can be found here.

Hopefully this will provide a good destination for anyone wishing to find some free sounds to use in their game, as CA has been for other game content in the past.

As always with CA, anyone wishing to contribute their own sounds, GPL-compat sounds they have found, or to assign sounds ingame to units, is welcome and encouraged to.

Don't forget that NanoBlobs and Merc Squad also have a lot of sounds in them that I made, including a lot of cool weapons sounds and explosions. You're welcome to use those, and they have appropriate licenses.

Where is nanoblobs and merc squad hosted? I have redone the unit replies which I think are reasonably good but I can't find good explosion sounds.
