Looking: tactics/unit microing only game

Post by dimm »

Whats the best way to play a game where all you do is micro units on a small map with probably a koth objective.
The effect I imagine is kind of like war evolution but with more units than just a commander. And you and opponents get lots of units and charge at a one spot. jk
This could be through mod, script or map;

Map where the players start on top of unassailable mountains with the 'arena' bellow that can't be built on except at a few metal spots.

A script that generates units automatically or through my choices and keeps score.

possible with the missioneditor, i started something like this but then it got broken.
koth objective
CA has a koth mode where you must hold an area. (defined by startboxes)
Also look at S44 if you havent already. There you captures flags for supply.

Isn't there a BA Skirmish mod like you want? And BobTheDinosaur's game is like that too, isn't it?

Gundam has a heavy focus on this too, with its heroes... but the heroes are only part of the game.

Blood and Steel is probably the closest to what you describe; although you do get re-enforcements in that game; for some reason im getting the impression that you'd like a game where you start with a set force, and never get more units... either way its fun and i suggest you try it.

I tried most of your suggestions. The biggest problem is that no one else wants to play. So i really didnt get a good look at most.I couldn't find xta (deployment?) and i wasn't gonna try cuberor

Blood and steel and s44 were alot alike. i do appreciate their simplified income but they don't have the same microing experience as ta based mods where for example u can dodge missiles or keep weaker units behind or maneuver or rush through an enemy line etc. i might not have said this in my previous post. also i dint like the huge range and tiny units.

I only got to try ca tactics once with other people but the chickens beat us pretty fast. someone said it crashes. I think there's a failure in this mode where there is a limited point to attacking the enemy like no points to score for kills or koth. another person told me that those games drag on cause people run away with their remaining units.

BA skirmish is my favorite. although i didn't actually play it with people and all the computer did was not crash, i think this would be closest to what i was looking for. Spending a lot of time zoomed in is a good indicator of what i am looking for.

so the real problem is; would anyone like to play?

Actually, i think the best solution would be a map that forced this type of game play because the AI might cope with it and it would be a lot easier to play with other mods.

btw i think disabling the sort by # of players in ta clients would increase mod diversity and the total number of players. there used to be a lot more people playing spring.

ledarsi (or possibly someone else, I forget) once made a CA mutator that had the 'unit micro' angle covered. Being CA, you can also have KOTH.

Deployment starts you with commander and certain number of units. Tactics starts you with just a few units. I don't see why you'd play tactics in chickens, since chickens can keep coming at you almost forever while you can't build any new units.

Basically what you want is for quantum to appear tomorrow and fix mission editor. Mission editor would let you make the game you want in less than a day.

I'd hardly say Supply is simplified considering you need to control distribution manually. That and you can dodge dumbfire projectiles (Mortar, Flamethrower, RPG) and you certainly need to keep weaker units behind stronger ones (Infantry behind Tanks, Rifles behind SMG), and play with pushes/flanking (Suppression, Flanking Bonuses, Sector Based Armour, Penetration). The huge range and tiny units is a viable criticism, however.
