It wouldn't be nice.
I tried it and it looks ugly, 'cos the background is in most cases black or something similar, but it is never the (ocean) ground color, so it gives very ugly colors (greens, oranges, reds).
Perhaps I will someday find a way to determine the ocean ground color and replace the background color with it, but it has not top priority.

It does take the defined water colors, right?

the surface color yes, but the water is semi transparent, so the final colors depends a lot on the background color. on the map it is the ground texture, around it is a different color (mostly black), duno what defines it, but it doesn't matter 'cos it is on most maps a not fitting one.

It would be trivial in terms of FPS cost if done correctly...

Perhaps you can add a tag so that those mappers who know the ocean colour beforehand can set the background colour to it and have the water go out further..

It would help with some instructions on how to test this. I downloaded the latest buildbot SVN, and was told you write

/water 2

which just put on the normal animated water from before, so i tried different # and

/water 4

says something about bump mapped water but missing textures "bitmaps\caustic##.jpg" i tried putting in a few dummies up to 23 but it wants more and more so I'm wondering if you can get the real ones somewhere? And will it work then...

sorry about the stupid problems but if you want nondev people who don't dig around in mantis/svn all day to test it helps if there's some simple instructions...

installer file, from the buildbot page argh linked to...

I know from experience there's often some additional junk that you need to put in that everyone takes for granted everyone knows about or dealt with 2 months ago and then forgot... like when you had to update the dev-il libraries...

Yeah indeed I believe something is wrong in current Spring base files:
Spring looks for causticXX.jpg files in "bitmaps/" whereas they are currently in "bitmaps/caustics/"

Yes, updating my gfx drivers fixed this problem, and I guess there's other stuff needing new drivers too...

I placed those caustic.jpgs in a spring/bitmaps folder and then it works.

yeah but actually if you used the SVN installer you already had these files in the bitmaps.sdz archive. But it seems they aren't in the good directory inside the archive.

Maybe springcontent.sdz is not being built properly/does not include some important file. I also get the same error on loading /water 4 from a fresh SVN compile.

Edit: Took a while to test that. :P

Can you toggle the options ingame? Like turn off reflections or change the parameters?

Registry, for now. I'm sure it'll get added to SpringSettings later on.
