Argh.. seriously less with the condesending subltly insulting tone.. I think KDR was going for sorta cutsey animeish and not GRIM DARK.. in which case I think it looks fine and I actually like it..

Maybe it'll come together as the skin gets completed- I assume that, for once, you'll actually complete a skin, instead of leaving it half-done?
What kind of shit is this? Most of your textures consist of armor plating and random per face beveling, with anything different few and far in between.

Christ, take it easy. I'm not even that invested in the recent flames involving Argh, but Snipa, that's just absurd.

I look forward to seeing where you go with it, KDR.

Perhaps it is...

Edit: Yeah, that does seem a bit overkill...

seriously less with the condesending subltly insulting tone.
If he didn't want critique, he shouldn't show his work in the WIP thread, that's what this thread is for, after all. It wasn't meant to be condescending or insulting, I'm just saying that I don't like it, and why I don't like it. That's what critique is about. Given that you don't post your work here for people to see, maybe you don't get that.
I think KDR was going for sorta cutsey animeish and not GRIM DARK
I think that's a bad design decision. KDR makes everything cutesy and anime, and it's not a good fit for a grand-scale space game, imo. I don't want to see cute spacecraft going to cute fights with cute explosions.

It's just my opinion, as a player and fan of grand-scale space games. As an artist, KDR's entitled to do whatever he wants.
Most of your textures consist of armor plating and random per face beveling, with anything different few and far in between.
Answering a critique by comparing with the person who is critiquing's work is not constructive. WIP threads are places where we should all feel free to say what we think. Given that you don't submit work here, I think you should maybe start doing so, and see how this works, before you flame again. Taking critique is a necessary part of being an artist working on public pieces.

Next time, instead of replying like that, think about the strong places in KDR's work- the things you liked about it. Here, I'll state the things I thought were positives (should have done this from the get-go, but meh, I was in a hurry, my refrigerator's been acting up tonight, so I posted without editing enough):

KDR, the things I liked about the piece was that you were obviously taking your time doing the hand-bevels, and the texture for the cockpit looks nice and glassy.

gentlemen, my advice is to do what I have done, add argh to your foes list, do not bother raging at him as he will play victim and move on.

people will see that argh is often full of it and we need not stress and give him the attention he so craves. Please, take the higher road and add him to your ignore list.

So you don't like KDR's general art style (which isn't something that should be critiqued at all imo, just the implementation thereof), and happily state this as your critique. Snipa comments on your art style, and you call it flaming.
Given that you don't submit work here,
This is completely false, so kindly don't use it to attempt to raise yourself above Snipawolf.
Next time, instead of replying like that, think about the strong places in KDR's work- the things you liked about it.
Yes, this is what you should have done instead of completely shooting it down. Thank you for advising Snipawolf of something completely irrelevant to his comments but very applicable to your own.
WIP threads are places where we should all feel free to say what we think.
Which is precisely what Snipawolf did in a tone similar to your own regarding KDR's work, but when he does it, it's "flaming".

Oh? Where's Snipa's work, then? He's never submitted anything in this thread, to my knowledge. If I'm mistaken, well, where is it?

No, because my points were about the work. There's a very real difference there. I'm not attacking KDR as a person, I'm saying that the work didn't turn out well, in my opinion.

I'll keep that in mind- instead of offering actual critique, I should just say what is pleasant

Look, I'm going to end with this: you may not like my opinions, but that doesn't mean I cannot express them, in this thread, which from the beginning has been about critique- not happy joy-joy just because you're opposed to a particular person's POV. Without critique, artists don't improve. People who want to improve take critique- I have submitted more art here than any of the rest of you, combined- go count 'em, if you're not sure. Not all of the statements were positive, but that's how critique works. You do not get better, if everybody always says your work is fantastic all the time.

Spend 5 minutes looking through the thread? The image host for the older stuff is gone, but seriously it's not exactly hidden.

Looks like a direct critique of the work, in the same vein as your own.

it's like the people who designed the modern Beetle sat down and designed a fighter. Way too cute, lacks all signs of a practical, ruthless military design.
Employing the same sort of tact you complain of Snipa lacking would result in something more in terms of "I think it could use more of a practical and ruthless military design rather than being so cute."
I assume that, for once, you'll actually complete a skin, instead of leaving it half-done?
Again, every bit as uncalled for and tactless as Snipawolf's comment (which it admittedly was), so don't be complaining about his behaviour.

Then again, I suppose this is all my fault for being incapable of tolerating blind arrogance and condescending attitudes. So I'll just shut up.

I just did- never saw anything that wasn't just a texture. No finished work. Snipa's been sitting on everything for his game, with only the occasional shot, it's hardly a secret that we really don't know what it looks like.
Looks like a direct critique of the work to me.
Saying, "you suck, therefore your opinion sucks" is pretty much the antithesis of real critique. I hear plenty of opinions from people who are not artists, they're just as valid as the opinions of artists whose skills I recognize. That'd be like me saying you can't offer critique of my work, or immediately coming down on your opinion, because I don't like your work. See the difference here?
Employing the same sort of tact you complain of Snipa lacking would result in something more in terms of "I think it could use more of a practical and ruthless military design rather than being so cute."
No, that would just leave KDR under the impression that I saw no issues with the execution or choices made. I did see issues, and I raised them. That's part of critique.

Well, here's the nice version, then: "KDR, please take the time to complete your work to a professional standard- make it realistic for once, the game deserves it".

I don't think that it would serve the game well, to come with really interesting LUA code and interesting gameplay, if the art was a major turnoff.

Shit, can't you people say anything without going into a huge flamewar?

Yes, I am going for a more realistic style. The problem is that I don't have much experience with metalwork so I'm practicing.

It was my fault, I didn't express myself well, and I think everybody thought I was just trashing you, which is not what I meant to do :P

Hmm. Metalwork... Really good metal work, which I'll be the first to say I don't do, as I'm too lazy for the amount of work it involves, involves working from brushed areas to near-chromes on areas of wear.

I've been trying an experiment lately, since I did the new wheels for GMN's tanks, where I'm rendering metallics in 3D, then placing them on the model and weathering / shading them to fit the fake lighting and geometry. Still figuring this one out, but it looks promising, as a time-saver- modeling a really complex greeble if polycount doesn't matter is so easy, it's mainly just working with color after that.

WIP should have a separate discussion thread. Or it should be renamed to showcase or something, I only come to look at the images, I never read what anyone writes.

I'm beginning to wonder the same thing myself...

This is a random APC I made on sunday for the hell of it. It's loosely based off the American Stryker APC. I also have it ingame, but I can't be bothered getting pictures right now.

EDIT: Please Note: The teamcolour is hidden for the wings texture, that's why you can't see any. As the teamcolour is the texture 1 alpha channel, it can mess up wings (which uses for invisibility, as you'd expect)

KDR; a good way to get a realistic metal texture easily (and how I do mine) is to jump on flickr and have a look at some metal objects. Find something you like, copy it into photoshop, and then use a layer overlay (I recommend hard light/overlay, but multiply/soft light work well on occasion).

Then play with brightness contrast until you're happy with the result.
It's reasonably cheap, and you don't get as much control as handpainting everything, but because it's literally from metal, you get a realistic look with little effort.

You can get even more control by either copying the layer multiple times and using variating layer overlays, and then playing with opacity to get interesting effects; or for a dirtier metal effect, use a number of different metal layers overlayed. An advantage of this is that it introduces tonal qualities that you can't get (unless you're really clever) by handpainting.

EDIT: The following were done using primarily this technique. You can see it most clearly on the last one. Note that I used about three metal overlays before I got the rusted grungey tone I was after, but I was quite pleased with it. I also played with the hue/saturation of each overlay to get the colours I wanted.

Yeah, the overlay (that wasn't the only change though, I've added some color and shading variation as well) imroved it but it's still not there.
