Quick Start Guide

Post by SinbadEV »

So I came up with a quick start guide, the kind of thing you can point people at and have them not have as many "stupid" questions or excuses for not trying the game out... Any additions/subtractions/corrections that you could recomend... or do we already have something like this.. I think it could be a good thing to put in the wiki if I can sharpen it up a bit.

STEP1:
Ensure your computer is ready for spring. Make sure your Video Card drivers are up to date.

STEP2:
Download the core installer - from the taspring.clan-sy.com ( http://taspring.clan-sy.com/dl/taspring_0.61b2.exe ), install it,
run the settings program, open up the selectkeys.txt or uikeys.txt files to configure which keys do what.

STEP3:
Start "spring.exe" and choose yes to being the server, choose a test
script and look around... poke around...

Controls ARE CRAZY!!!-> Read the README.html contained in the docs folder of the install directory, if you are lazy the folowing is the basics.

Left click selects objects, chooses options, and issue orders if you pick an order by hotkey or menu option.

Right clicking perfoms the default operation on the object or objects currently selected (right clicking a unit "guards" that unit, if a unit is guarded by a unit with repair ability it will repair that unit if it get damaged, guarding a factory will assist in the construction, right clicking the ground moves to that location, right clicking an enemy attacks it, etc... people don't get this method and whine about it... but the important thing is, if you click to build a building, or attack or guard, and then right click, you will do the default action instead of the action you've chosen and the action you've selected will stay selected until you left click again...)

Holding shift cues up actions, shift clicking the same order on top of a "ghosted" order will cancel this order, shift dragging will do a group of buildings, shift+ alt or ctrl or both will modifiy the shape that you are drawing.

Get used to the controls, there is no single player, but the random enemies script is a good start. (don't whine about AI being missing, it is coming soon)

STEP4:
To play online you will basically need port 8452 open for pretty much everything.

Start the TASClient.exe, get a username, sign in to the default server and use the help menu to figure out how to use this client, ask in the #main channel if you have any questions or check out the forums... when you are ready, douple click a game at the bottom that has a green light... if you are missing a map or mod get it from fileuniverse... ( http://www.fileuniverse.com/?p=listing&ID=90 ) ... if you can't host, it's an issue with your router or firewall that can be fixed but I would try to find an open game to start out with.

DO IT NOW!!!

The most important : read the README ! ^^ it's in the docs folder.

Spring don't need .NET.

And I think it's important to say you need to open port 8452 to play online.

That's all I can correct.

If I'm not mistaking, the new lobby doesn't require .NET at all.

The old lobby required .NET, the new one does not. So the latest installers do no longer warn about .NET since it is not required by anything else in spring either.
