Question about Upspring and s3o models

Post by minion »

Hello All

New to this forum, been at TAU for a long time.

I have a question concerning Upspring and s3o models. Looking at the picture I have attached, on the left is a 3 point triangle, on the right is a 4 point square. I using Rhino 3D version 3 SR3.
Getting back to the triangle and square, using triangles on my models work fine within Rhino, when viewing as a wire frame and shade previewing.
But in the past 3DO builder did not display where I had used triangles when imported the model was imported in a .lwo. They were just missing.
when using a 4 point square and merging two control points into a triangle I had no problem with the model importing into 3DO builder.
But in Rhino when using command "MeshToNurb" to create a model ready to have textures applied to each single face for rendering, the command would delete all squares merged into a triangle.

So to the question. If I create 3 point triangles in Rhino 3D and export the model in a .OBJ file or .3DS file for Upspring and s3o file creation, will I have any problems?

Thanks

PS. This is one of my models: Fortress

Tris work fine for s3o, don't work fine for 3do.

I use Rhino for all my s3o modelling in S44 and don't have any issues.

Pretty much any shape of poly will work (upspring or spring triangulates automatically when necessary), as long as it is convex and flat. Non-convex or non-planar faces tend to do very strange things.

I've replaced and removed more poly's from the model which you described as "bad". The model is looking a lot better now.

Minion, I assume you put the port of IW to Spring on hold along with the Smoth's site FF project?

Hi neddiedrow

I had a computer failure recently and lost the latest version of TA I-War for OTA.
Now though I've started on this 3D space strategy instead, I'm still working on the older OTA I-War game as well.
