This is a clearinghouse thread for people who are planning on installing Windows Vista (Or have already installed Vista) and playing Spring. Report bugs, talk performance, etc.
A few bits of important information:
ATI just released the Catalyst 7.1 driver for Vista, the first one to include OpenGL support. The jury is still out as to the quality of this release, but OpenGL support is a step in the right direction. Release notes here: http://www2.ati.com/relnotes/catalyst_71_vista.html
Nvidia has a driver released, but it is missing significant features like SLI for anything that's not a 8800 card. It should run Spring. The full list of missing features is here: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/1 ... _Notes.pdf
List of retired cards (While these cards are retired Vista does include basic drivers that may or may not play games):
ATI is not going to release official drivers for any Radeons 9200 and earlier. http://ati.amd.com/technology/windowsvi ... ducts.html
Nvidia is not going to release drivers for anything before the 5xxx series. http://www.nvidia.com/page/technology_vista_gpu.html
Creative drivers:
They're retiring the entire SoundBlaster Live except for the 24bit ones. They have some drivers released for the Audigy(2) and X-Fi cards, and someone has hacked a SBLive driver for Vista.
Window mode players:
If you play Spring in a window, don't be surprised to have odd things happen to your Windows interface if you are running Aero (Or Aero Glass). Spring uses OpenGL which may make Windows revert to clasic mode (Some other applications do this too).

I already updated the thread to reflect that ATI released the 7.1s with OpenGL yesterday.
Also, Nvidia just released the 100.54 Vista Forceware drivers! This includes support for the 8800 series (Including DX10) and they promise to make a driver with DirectX9/OpenGL SLI support for those cards available tomorrow the 31st. Here is a link to it http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.54.html and I will be updating the main post with a link to the new release notes!

Does Ubuntu include the latest Nvidia driver on its CD? http://phoronix.com/?page=news_item&px=NDAzOA Dec21st is when the 8800 got added to the NVidia linux driver, version 1.0-9746
I don't think so, but there is a 3rd party repository with them:
(ie. add this line to /etc/apt/sources.list, run apt-get update; apt-get upgrade, or the graphical equivalent of this)
Code: Select all
deb http://nvidia.limitless.lupine.me.uk/ubuntu edgy stable
Vista business edition installs with the 8800 and displays in low colour mode. It resizes to native resolution and max colours once the drivers are installed.
I get horrible distortions of the water in dynamic water mode, and I have frame rates around 20, but I shall venture into nvidia control panel to correct this.
