Linux packaging?

Post by clericvash »

Just wondering since there is now a GPL installer for windows, when people will start creating the oppropriate packages for easier-than-svn installation?

UnityLobby and AF's lobby are both comming along nicely so i don't think it should be too long before the packages should be created and a lobby for linux included?

Thanks for looking.

Sorry about the wrong forum.

Has anyone from the debian team actually said they will make debian files?

We need more than one distro to do it.

Ubuntu, Fedora and Open-SUSE would be the ones to poke i would think.

Ubuntu is based of debian, if u get it into debian good chance it will get noticed & into Ubuntu

As fedora had a rpm, found a maillist before with one for 72b1, might try & ask or prob just show it to tvo. To contact the person, at very least be a good starting point for creating a rpm-src or rpm from it.

Also believe found one for madriva aswell, thing i better go & dig those links up tomorrow

Yes, I've spoken to one of the debian game team guys, he's actually working on it (copyright check). I also have packages for 0.74b2 but I won't up them because 0.74b3 is due soon, and the packages are missing some files (making it almost more awkward to install atm then compiling from source is).

Once the package is in debian, I'll ask ubuntu to sync it if they didn't already do that - I think I know the right irc channels / people to get that done. Not sure it will make feisty tho, but feisty+1 should be doable.

I have no clue about Fedora / SUSE tho (as in, who / which irc channel to contact etc.)

Tobi, you are awesome. I can't wait until I can play again. I am in a similar position to Masse.

Concerning OpenSuSE (and maybe other, see below), they switched to BuildService. This is meant to provide all what is needed to build stuff. And the goal is to be compatible for Suse, Mandriva, Debian/Ubuntu, ....

Starting point is here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service

Extract:
... the Build Service is a complete distribution development platform providing the infrastructure required for development of future openSUSE based distributions.

It also features services that enable compilation and packaging for the other Linux distributions, like Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, and many more.
It could be really interesting to know how it works ...

spring is the main reason I don't use linux at the moment.

For me it doesn't seem that right now Spring is ready for Linux distributions. It could be in a week or two, but we should at least have a working lobby for some time - to reduce at least the number of bugs (or to see there is no bug :-) ). UnityLobby seems to be progressing so it is just a matter of time.

@CompWiz, @duncs - as I didn't had Windows from before finding out of spring I played from the start just under linux/wine, and it works fine. :P . Probably it is not as nice as on windows (no sound, can't resize lobby) but it's the same fun. Hope the lobby will be ready soon :-)

Getting a stable version to distribute is definitely a good thing first impressions are vital. If Linux is to have any Linux following it needs to have a stable lobby I agree waiting a while for that to happen bugs to be found etc is definitely worth it.

Be nice to have packages as it is, avoiding users having problems when manually compiling and forgetting to setup datadirs / data files...

Besides Lobby Client, Spring is good as it is & be nice to have a bigger player base. Not exactly alot of really good RTS for Linux, so not in much competation

Besides UnityLobby just got basic multiplayer (needs testing)
and using gtk-2.10 / pygtk.2.10 and there still in development branches for some distros

Someone should make one of those installer things, like ID Software did with Doom3 and Quake4. How about loki-installers?

I believe rpm and deb would cover 90% of users, and the rest will be able to compile for themselves. Making the packages, well, a different story, no idea how it's done :)

and number is how many hits per day in http://distrowatch.com/
1 Ubuntu - DEB - 2513
2 openSUSE - RPM - 2225
3 Fedora - RPM - 1502
4 MEPIS - DED - 1093
5 PCLinuxOS - RPM - 1062
6 Mandriva - RPM - 1024

and i've used ubuntu for a while and i got used to it and i tought it was awesome when compared to xp... but then i read all about openSUSE and i tried it and i was amazed :)

im sure that openSUSE goes over ubuntu in time

Maybe, but since you can convert rpm's to deb's with alien an rpm installer would still be a bit redundant. ;)
