Sigh... I check the forum so rarely. And every time I hope that SWS is released!
At least make me a beta tester or something so I can have some satisfaction.

Have you signed up to the beta thread? The only way to get beta access is to do so, as downloads are via the forum...

Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
Been a while since I posted one of these - due to my tardiness with posting, rather then to work not being done. I thought it'd be nice to show everyone that we're still making good progress, even while we're busy beta-testing.
This is the Imperial AT-AR Walker
The AT-AR walker is ordered through the Walker Lab. It is the lightest, most nimble walker available from the walker lab, and is designed to round out that lab that is typically accessed for heavy, hard-hitters with a lighter, more flexible unit. The ATAR excels at raiding and fast response missions, which its good speed and maneuverability complement. In a straight fight, however, its cost effectiveness is reduced compared to other options available from the walker and vehicle lab.

I like it, looks a bit like the AT, but with it's own style.
Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
Texture and team color are too dark. You have baby sky on the storm troopers and a very very dark blue on the at-ar
I know you want muted colors but if there is a blue player and a sky blue the blue player will be almost black and be confused as to why the sky blue player has blue units.

Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
We've had this discussion before - do remember that I was against people being able to choose a whole palette worth of colours to begin with - but I think if you have a blue and a sky blue player there are going to be issues no matter what mod you're in, just because they're so bloody similar.
Secondly, I don't think many people rely heavily on teamcolour for identification purposes in IW - they are more likely to use icons and so on. I typically use the general hue of colours as a sort of collective identification for groups of forces. 'this swathe of units are mine, those swathe of units are his'
In terms of the general tone of the unit, I think that keeping them lighter would turn all the walkers into a generic ATST grey tone which would make them hard to distinguish and look a pretty bland bunch. Having some contrast between them adds to the visual interest as well as aiding recognition at a distance.

It's not unappreciated. It's good to get some actual feedback rather then vader lolpics for a change

ditto. if you are going to pastelise your teamcolours (even if you aren't, good advice in general to follow!), could you make sure it is consistent across all units. so if i have my stormtrooper standing next to my at-st, they look like they are on the same team.smoth wrote:your project, just givin' sum feedbacks.
IOW: do whatever you want, but please be consistent :)
Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
IIRC warlord doesn't want a pastelized look, he wants a desaturated look.

Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
probably, and whatever he wants to do is fine! all i ask is that all units get the same teamcolour treatment (ie if its 50% alpha on 128 128 128 grey on the stormtrooper, its 50% alpha on 128 128 128 grey on the AT-ST, and the same on the A-Wing.) what WZ decides to do is up to him, im certainly not going to demand that he put 100% teamcolour on top of 0 0 0 black, but please, think of the kittens and be consistent :)

Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
The criticism is fair - ideally I would have set a standard grey undercolour and a standard alpha colour for teamcolour. However, SWS/IW's development has gone on for so long, and with so many contributors, that this didn't happen initially, and the thought of going back and updating everything makes me reasonably sad in the pants.
That being said, while more consistency is good for UI intuitiveness, graphically it does not work all the time. On small units with minimal teamcolour (such as infantry), clear and bright teamcolour is needed. Alternatively, on large units, or those with large areas of teamcolour, the same bright TC would look obnoxious. Similarly, darker units require a different teamcolour approach from light units. More weathered units require a different teamcolour approach from more pristine units. Some units have clear 'battle stripes' painted on top of the design. Other units have teamcolour more subtly integrated into their metal tones, etc. It all makes for a very difficult system to keep consistent. While a more organised approach from the outset probably would've been a good idea (and I can recommend it to other modders), I think we've done a semi-decent job of balancing recognition and visuals of our units.

I think he is just saying that it is inconsistent which is kinda where I was going with the fact that the units are blue and lite blue. Again, bright colors are still going to happen whether or not you want them to unless you write some lua to forcefully desaturated team colors.
As it stands, i could pick hot pink or a teal and completely be bright and colorful. The thing is having a darker color isn't what you are wanting. I don't know what happened with the lua teamcolor acess stuff.

Re: The Star Wars: Imperial Winter Eyecandy Thread [56k warning]
Doesn't really bother me, I usually play as bright green or bright yellow because it's easier to discern my units quickly at the icon view level.
However, if I pick bright yellow (and most colours people pick are typically quite bright), I've designed the units so that they don't look like cartoons with these colours being picked. As I described above, for some units I've increased the strength of teamcolour because they need it. For others I've reduced it to avoid the teamcolour becoming too dominant on the texture. I think on the whole it is not difficult to tell whose units belong to whom, and I think things still look good despite having teamcolour everywhere.
Teamcolour is a non-essential courtesy for many mods - spikedhelmet has stringently avoided putting TC on the majority of his units, for example.
