When a noob joins #main they're told they need BA to play spring. This is a blatant lie, a huge untruth.

People then say "but be honest most games are BA so they must need BA to play a decent game", which is a logical fallacy and just as big an untruth. There are not 1, not 2, not 3,4, but 5 XTA autohosters, there're plenty of XTA games going, and if you host EE you're very likely to get ppl joining if you make it clear in #main and #ee.

Heck you dont even have to ask for someone to host XTA, and I've gotten along fine finding plenty of games for the last 6 months only playing BA when soemone specifically asks me to via pm(rare, I have yet to even play v4.7).

If I see someone saying you need BA to play spring in #main to a noob, they're not being helpful, they're trolling plain and simple.

I like anime, I have a lot of it. Hell I am working on learning japanese. Otaku are anime nerds who think the term is cool, then are only a step away from a wapanese(or weaboo) who want to BE japanese. Otaku are the anoying anime fans, the ones who think furry art and fan fictions of sailor moon or fishugi are cool. They think that otaku is an endearing term but it is a deragotory one. They are just anoying, female ones draw transexual art of male anime characters and scream "kawaii" every chance they get. Often times their japanese is limited to KAWAII, BAKA and a few other choice words that they mix in with english because it is "cool" to them.

gags.

anyway, I want to state again, I DO NOT CARE THAT people play BA. I just want to see more variety.

I am not trolling when I say "most people play BA so you're most likely to want that, here's a link, also there are other mods". Sometimes if people are new and I'm about to start a game of EE or something I'll get them to download that and teach them. Thing is BA is pretty noob-friendly, especially if you've played TA before, so it's easiest to use that.

Also, in my experience, trying to play a game of anything except BA and maybe XTA if you're prepared for one chevron new guys, it's really hard to get a decent game going. Maybe it's the times I'm on, but even if I pm and ask a lot in the right channels, nobody ever wants to play.

Gundam I just don't like the gameplay of. I know a lot of work has gone into it and stuff, but it's just not my thing. But that paradise of gundam fanboys would be amazing. EE I like but it's quite fast paced and I am a boring dull person by nature who hates going over a leisurely pace of 5APM so I don't play it too much. NOTA is a pretty inventive TA based mod but I have seen exactly two games of it ever hosted, one by me. It's rather sad.

Awesome like glass in our eyes :P.

Nota an bota were both neat when I looked at them :).

I think the TA styled mods(TA:STYLED, GET IT?) are good for beginers, they have a slow pace and strategies are pretty basic. Combine with that short ranges, slow units and smaller units overal, you have mods that can be played on shitty machines. I think TA:S is needed for beginers because they are slow paced and very defense oriented. This is easier for noob players with no skill to handle.

Gundam is pretty tricky, I am making it as easy as I can but I know it has a hell of a learning curve and you REALLY REALLY have to know the mechs. There is no one unit that wins at all times. I designed it to be a game for either hardcore rts players or people who really knew then anime. Most of the units reflect their anime abilities with a few minor changes here and there.

EE has a great macro style of play and is neat to watch, I have not gotten used to the hubs yet but that is because I have been unable to play it. I like the factions in it and a lot of the battles are very fun and fast paced.

SWTA is neat, that mod is fun to watch, I do not like playing it but I like watching it.

AATA(SP: 1944) has some really neat gameplay ideas and units, I just hate the models and the textures are a bit too muddy for me.

Nanoblobs is neat but I do not like it's theme which was more of a spam till you win deal. If you had two good players matches can lock up indefintely. I am still a proponent of a more traditional rts version of nanoblobs

Kernal panic is a spiffy new mod and it is pretty to look at. I have not had the pleasure of playing a game yet but it is pretty to watch.

I know what film it's from, it's that one where some crazy guy tells them to go somewhere to get some cash and a lot of wacky hijinx occur along the way.

fuck it i'll just cross post since nobody clicked my link
I'm going to go in to a big spiel here, so bear with me for a moment if you don't mind.

I think making a successful mod for the Spring community is probably one of the hardest things one could do. The problem with the community is that it is so small already. Let me draw a parallel here with UT2004 (I know, not again! Heh, bear with me.) UT2004 is a game with a fanbase several times larger than Spring's, yet it cannot even support all of it's different gametypes. There is a problem that occurs when several gametypes (or mods) exist for the same core game - people have their favorite, and the community splinters in to groups. People get accustomed to playing one of the gametypes. If two gametypes are similar, people will have an easier time moving from one to the other.

This is the root of the problem with Spring. There are so many extremely varied mods that the community cannot support them all.

Lets take for example Smoth. Smoth has an awesome mod called Gundam. I love Smoth's mod - there are countless hours invested in to it, and the groundwork is laid to become an extremely fun mod. As sad as it is to say, it will probably never be able to compete with XTA or AA, despite it being in a similar state to the early stages of both of those mods. The reason is that people are lazy - they could play the mod once or twice for something different, but if they really want to learn the mod and play a good game on it, they will have a problem on their hands. If they do host and fill up a game, it will most likely be half filled with people playing it for the first time. To get a good game, it's necessary to host with either an AA-based mod, or XTA, because that's what people have learned to play.

If ten times as many people played Spring, this problem would not exist. A group of people would form that say Gundam is their favorite mod, and the community for the mod could occur. The only way to balance a mod and make it fun is by playing it - over, and over, and over, with tons of different people and tons of feedback. Here, people say they want to play different mods, but they know that XTA and the AA's will be more balanced and more interesting to play, simply because more people play them.

At the same time, this does not mean Gundam is a failure. This is where I will transition to maps, because maps are basically the same as far as this is concerned. If you wanted, you could say that a map, or a mod, or a band, or any kind of art is only as good as how popular it is. In that case, the best map I've ever made is one for CS:Source, called surf_skyworld. More people have downloaded surf_skyworld than any of my maps for any other game combined. There are five or six servers last time I checked that run surf_skyworld 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's possibly the most popular surf map for Source, yet I do not hardly give a shit about it. I made it in one day because all the surf maps I played on CS:Source sucked. It's interesting that so many people love the map, so I know I did something right when making it, but at the same time it doesn't mean much to me because I didn't put much effort in to it.

On the other end of the spectrum, I made a map for the original UT called CTF-Hybrid which merged two gametypes - assault and CTF. This map took me longer to make than all my other UT99 maps, probably somewhere north of 200 hours. Bots couldn't work on it because of the merge of gametypes, and it was so ridiculously huge it would require at least 20 players to be fun. Needless to say, this map was not accessible for people to play, and therefore it wasn't. Not ever was a match played on it. Still, this map means more to me than surf_skyworld, because what makes a map a success to me is a combination both of how well accepted the map is and how proud I am of it.

I guess what I'm saying is that different people make maps and mods for different reasons, and if popularity to them is important, then they need to realize before going in what will make their work accessible to people. The sad truth of Spring is that until the community grows, the only mods that will truthfully be extensively played will only be XTA and AA. Modders who are making mods for themselves will be content with their work, just as I am content with CTF-Hybrid, and modders who spite the community for not playing their mods probably need to mod for a game with a larger community that can support it.

I think that Gundam is one of the better looking mods for Spring, yet I have no idea how it plays. I have only ever played it by myself and I am dying to play a real match. There are never any games hosted for this mod. I wish there was some way for the few players that are currently interested in this mod to organize and play a few matches. Is there a Gundam room in TASClient that we can join to try this mod out? Better yet, someone needs to set up an autohost for Gundam and the other rarely played mods. I am considering doing this. What kind of hardward is required for hosting an autoserver? I definitely have access to some beefed up DSL circuits that can handle heavy traffic loads. I just need to know details and requirements for setting an autoserver up.

I'm pretty sure that as soon as we can get the game including in the major linux distros, the userbase should grow by a large amount. We are hoping to have it ready for Ubuntu for their October 7.10 release.

hunter put quote marks around your name to fixe the quote tag and I did click fyi. :P.

Carbon, if you are really interested in gundam, pm me, I need to know a few things as I am looking for some players to be permanently a part of a gundam test team.

10053r, I was under the impression from most of the linux guys I know that linux users are interested in things other then games(although I hang with programers and the only game they play is wow). It would be neat to see some linux users but I fear that we will get os wars with people argueing all the time. it seems to happen a lot. Anyway, I look forward to more players I think it will be neat! I just worry, it is what I do.

I once suggested a Big Mod were you can play Gundam & EE against BA... and after all those "NeverNewNoMatterNoobs" of Mains have choosen to join the OMG MOST TAMOD OF THE UNIVERSE - you could start a slight Balanceshift :D feel free to be mean... After all - besides the Bertha nothing in BA has the Range of EE Artillery..

Mods can and should exist separate from one another. Despite what you may think E&E VS Gundam isn't even possible because the two mods have different paces and economies.

That being said for example, gundam would EAT BA because you could rush faster. Mods are balanced within themselves. There are things in gundam that cannot counter ba and vice-versa. Fang and I joke about making gundam VS EE but it would not be a good idea.

I know most people think all of the spring mods are just another TA with different units and a new graphics but trust me, it wouldn't work out.

Smoth wrote:If I wanted to promote gundam I would add in seed and wing. Then every one of you 'tards would be up to your ears in otaku morons. Which is not my intent. This whole site would be infected with fan fictions, fan art, people talking about how hot lacus cline is and how manly kira is. There would be tons of transexual art and gay manga. I could constantly start threads about it and be a complete attention whore. I have the typing speed to constantly flood the forum with discussion.
Do it!

First, I don't think it will work, I don't see otaku becoming hard core RTS players, they'll try it maybe for a week then forget about it and resume their habits. Then, anyway there's lots of retard and creepy geeks around, I don't think we'd die from a few more.

Currently, the Spring player base is almost only people that come looking for an improved TA, if you managed to draw an entirely different fanbase, that were sufficiently attached to Gundam to not switch to BA upon the lobby pressure, then suddenly we'd have two player community in the lobby, and so player would realise that yes, indeed, there is more than BA. Maybe, after realising that indeed the Spring engine can run more than one mod, they'll look for other mods?

(But don't lure yourself, speedmetal Gundam would be the most commonly hosted Gundam games)

I tried speedmetal gundam... it was horrid, Gundam units move faster then some TA aircraft. However, the KEY point Zwzsg was that I would have to stop what I am doing and go completely into promotion mode. That would be because as you stated.. otaku are not the kind to drift too far from their home. I would have to encourage fan fiction and again... include seed which is something I AM DEAD set AGAINST.

However, after 1.11 I was thinking about doing some promotional work for the mod. Do you have any tips Zwzsg?

Actually, the only thing idiotic posts like yours (or all your other image macro posts) will archive is to create an intense impression that you are a moron, and that your opinion should be discarded.

I know its the internet, but why not even pretend to be a bit more mature?
