Map of Europe

Post by CarRepairer »

If anyone (who might care) still hasn't seen EU1 v.02:
Image
It's mostly flat, save the few mountain ranges for kbots, making it work is a pain. And please hover over the cities and countries to see their names in the bottom left tooltip, I spent so long on that.

Awaiting suggestions and comments, thanks.

Edit: for anyone wondering why I made it so flat and low, I struggled with the heightmap for too long and decided I just want amphibs and hovers to have a good time and not ruin their fun :/

Metal is probably still imba, i think this is only suitable for a FFA (which is always imba anyway).

But thats mostly how europe maps are played, sooooooo.

Hey Car, I guess I'll write here too.

I really like the concept and the work you put into it to make it as realistic as possible (satellite maps, ect.).

The coastlines need some love, this can be easily done in carrara by making your seafloor layer (more) altitude dependent, and setting the upper bound right at the current sea level (use the camera tool for quick checks), and adding a new "beach" layer, with fading on the top and bottom right at the water level.

I like the population ~ metal idea, but currently it is skewed to western europe. Here is a bit of calculationz 4 u, following in the precision showed at the terrain mapping:

I'm guessing the map is made for ~12 players, right? Now, we have different tastes in metal density, but lets say 10 m per player on the map is good? that means 120 metal altogether (t1 mex, BA, blablabla) . wikipedia puts europes population at 728 million ppl, so 0.1648 m per million people is needed. Numbers:

Code: Select all

 country population metal required
-Russia 144 978 573	23,89246883
-Germany 83 251 851	13,71990504

-Georgia 4 960 951	0,817564725
-Norway 4 525 116	0,745739117
-Moldova 4 434 547	0,730813346
-Croatia 4 390 751	0,723595765
-Republic of Ireland 4 234 925	0,69791564
-Bosnia and Herzegovina 3 964 388	0,653331142
-Lithuania 3 601 138	0,593467542
-Albania 3 544 841	0,584189797
I would draw note to ukrain, russia and romania here, they need more M's! (also, the numbers wont add up, cause I used total population but left out really small countries where m<0.5)

-i checked and apparently the european part of russia only has 100 mill, so this is a bit tipped towards russia.

I kinda got sniped by this idea, but hey.

Also, if you render the map at a given resolution and resize to double that resolution, your tiles wont go to waste (and noone will care about a bit of blurring).
Cheers, BaNa

Hey thanks for the help.

About the coastline, you are absolutely right, I need to actually add something because it looks weird now. Someone else mentioned the texture is too dark so I'll work on that.

About metal, that is way too tough. For one thing I am going by city (city size and buildup more than population, and you've seen the nightsky rendering I used) and so a large country with most of its population in farms wouldn't apply. Also, I could add more metal to the east by just adding more small cities, but the problem I think is there has to be a distinction between start positions (lower metal) and the race to capture metal-rich land (England, France, Germany) and the best one could do is try to start equidistant from those places with starting (Spain, Scandinavia, Italy/Greece). Getting the metal balanced just right is impossible (as Sak said) so the best I can do is wait over time and see which start positions tend to win or lose more and adjust.

Oh and thanks BaNa for the carrara tips.

Ukraine has ~5 cities >= 1mill, Germany has ~4. Your lighting map method is nice, but eastern european countries have less money for light pollution than western european countries. Doesn't mean they are rural.

Oh, and fixx start positions pls, because they are needed for an ffa game.

Its really gimped towards britain, IMO. If you have a player start there they prettymuch cant lose, having such great defense and also being right next to france.

Even if nobody starts in britain, it will probably be a rush to see who can take it first, and imo Spain is the second most imba.

Also, the water isnt deep enough, you cant build underwater metal and e storages anywhere on the map.

usa win only a war alone it seems vs herself (3 times?)
but european union win lot of war (colonials by10' or herself by100')
the only war winner (alone) that i remind is the "ex"yougoslavia vs axis..all antic or medievil is very related and inacurat it seems
usa hav lot of advantag to hav a historical"certified"/documented history(i found 1860 pictures about getysburg battle and his "concentration lagger"
