Essential Map Torrent

Post by jackalope »

Here is my attempt at putting some spring maps into torrents for convenience:

Torrents may be downloaded at:
http://torrent.homeip.net:62320

Altored_Divide.sd7 24.41 MB
DeltaSiegeV10.sd7 49.50 MB
Supreme Battlefield.sd7 51.85 MB

The second consists of some slightly smaller maps that are commonly played, and some other maps that are small in file size and wouldn't hurt to download all in one chunk.

Ashaf Plateau V2.sd7 1.34 MB
Brazillian_BattlefieldV2.sd7 7.07 MB
Castles.sdz 2.49 MB
CoastToCoastRemake.sd7 4.35 MB
Comet Catcher Remake-v02.sd7 4.36 MB
CrossfireV1.sd7 5.23 MB
desertdunes.sd7 1.07 MB
Green_Fields.sd7 5.87 MB
GreenCometBasic.sd7 13.82 MB
GreenHaven-V3.sd7 1.43 MB
IceXuick-Pass-V2.sd7 6.51 MB
MoonQX.sd7 21.79 MB
Sands of War v2.sd7 2.09 MB
Shore2Shore_Remake-v01.sd7 3.86 MB
Small Supreme Battlefield.sd7 14.67 MB
SpeedMetal.sd7 4.29 MB
SpeedMetalDuo v2.sd7 1.99 MB
WideOpenCombat.sd7 4.43 MB
XantheTerra_v3.sdz 6.76 MB

(Original Post follows)
----------------------------
I am planning on starting a torrent of essential spring maps. My thinking is as follows: put together the most commonly played 10-15 maps as a starter pack for noobs, people who reinstall, etc. It should also help to relieve bandwidth from FU a little bit, when it comes back up. In this thread I'd like to hear suggestions from people as to what the most commonly played maps are.

Before anyone says, I 'm thinking we shouldn't include speedmetal.

As much as I support your embargo on Speed Metal, others will cry "unfair," or your torrents may be entirely neglected. As for the essentials, I suggest you hop on TASClient and just take down the names of all the maps that are currently being played. Take down map names several different times for a good idea of what gets played.

Speedmetal has got to be the most downloaded map on FU right now. You don't help them if you don't include it in any way.

Define "success".

In any case, I tried to do this before.

My advice: don't listen to anyone's advice. Include what maps you think should be included and exclude what maps you think should be excluded. There will never be a general consensus on anything.

Alright, I've created two torrents. The first consists of 3 large file size maps that seem to be played commonly.

Altored_Divide.sd7 24.41 MB
DeltaSiegeV10.sd7 49.50 MB
Supreme Battlefield.sd7 51.85 MB

The second consists of some slightly smaller maps that are commonly played, and some other maps that are small in file size and wouldn't hurt to download all in one chunk.

Ashaf Plateau V2.sd7 1.34 MB
Brazillian_BattlefieldV2.sd7 7.07 MB
Castles.sdz 2.49 MB
CoastToCoastRemake.sd7 4.35 MB
Comet Catcher Remake-v02.sd7 4.36 MB
CrossfireV1.sd7 5.23 MB
desertdunes.sd7 1.07 MB
Green_Fields.sd7 5.87 MB
GreenCometBasic.sd7 13.82 MB
GreenHaven-V3.sd7 1.43 MB
IceXuick-Pass-V2.sd7 6.51 MB
MoonQX.sd7 21.79 MB
Sands of War v2.sd7 2.09 MB
Shore2Shore_Remake-v01.sd7 3.86 MB
Small Supreme Battlefield.sd7 14.67 MB
SpeedMetal.sd7 4.29 MB
SpeedMetalDuo v2.sd7 1.99 MB
WideOpenCombat.sd7 4.43 MB
XantheTerra_v3.sdz 6.76 MB

Both can be found at:

http://torrent.homeip.net:62320

Let's start with this and see if there is even any interest.

Sounds good. Too bad I don't have a torrenter thing. Or know what a torrent is. All right I was only jokeing on the last one, but Torrents are just a pain in behind for me. They never seem to work...well... at all.

it's spelled azureus

the most common problem people have with torrents is super-slow speeds as a result of ports not being forwarded on their router.

We could always do something silly like just use Sourceforge, which has unlimited bandwidth that the SYs just aren't using for some reason (despite having a project page listed)

All you do is start a new project, call it the Spring Maps Project, give all map makers (except runecrafter and his spawn) admin status and make them all download an FTP app... voila. The system is just as easy to use as FU, has unlimited bandwidth, never goes down, has 17+ mirrors spread around the globe, doesn't use excessive ads, and doesn't have download line-ups.

I'm pretty sure that SF doesn't like people hosting content data there... although they've never stopped you. However, they do require that every project be opensource, so theoretically the raw images and PDF files used to construct the maps should be hosted there as well (not to mention your BOS scripts).

But nobody follows SF's rules, so none of that matters.

Torrent is the best - don't try to filch bandwidth, just provide your own. ABC is my fave Torrent client.
