I don't understand this kneejerk reactionary stuff.
This is not knee-jerk reactionary stuff, I have carefully considered this and reacted the conclusion that using a proprietary platform for development of open software makes no sense.

The time to act is when you have good evidence, not before, not a feeling in your balls.
Now this would be the definition of kneejerk reactionary stuff.

Prevention is easier in the long run than hosing down the fire when it eventually happens. Dependency on Github should be reduced and if a full migration off of it does not happen, then protocols should be put into place and TESTED for migrating to another service for when the inevitable finally happens.

Since the USA has been actively sanctioning groups that deal with whatever countries they want to undermine, i've been wanting to avoid any US based services.

Not sure how the restrictions apply to software though, and how likely they are to lock groups out of their services if, for example, someone from Iran buys a robot skin on some game.

Teh worst is when software, you trusted turns on you- suddenly DRM, suddenly needs a disk to work.
With great power, comes great core-rupture.

They are banning people with IP coming from countries the US government dislike.

Do we have to wait until the list broaden to encompass a country a Spring dev reside in?
(AFAIK most Spring dev are from outside the USA)

Traitors - every single one of them. If the were true amercians, they would sell out, this very instant.
We need a wall, to put all of them agaisnt it.

GitHub is required to comply with the U.S. export law

Therefore

Lets just say it, cooperate take-overism ruins everything good in open source, but also drives forward in a search for greener pastures, which are less likely to be corrupted.

Github hasnt had good recent advances for non-cooperations in a long time.. meanwhile gitlab has trained and improved.

Did you even read the article? He's correct, they're blocking people from a number of countries, and one of the guys that got blocked said he had been using only the free services.

The "U.S. export law" isn't some holy text. It and the "sanctioned parties" are rules made by U.S. politicians who have been voted in by the U.S. citizens for decades. If U.S. citizens don't want their products and services boycotted internationally they should elect people who lift the sanctions or change their export laws...

wikipedia says GitLab has its headquarters in "San Francisco, United States", and has apparently been forced to do the same:
GitLab moved from Microsoft Azure to Google Cloud Platform in August 11, 2018, which made the service inaccessible to users in Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria, due to sanctions imposed by Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States.[36]
That said....It's unlikely that we'll be affected by this.

I'd welcome having a spring mirror outside of Github (USA) if anyone is interested to set it up.

U.S. export law
is not equivalent to
They are banning people with IP coming from countries the US government dislike.

And with rights- imagine if spring got into the wrong hand. The revolutionary guard, would go t2 and rush the arabian peninsula.
Stopping spring saves life.

The laws are made by the government and reflects its tendencies, its likes and dislikes. So your two quotes are, in fact, equivalent.

Well, difficult case... It's like saying "Spring devs are banning players they dislike from the game"

I wanted to move to Framagit (https;//framagit.org), a Gitlab Instance made by a well-known french association. But, the problem will be the same. If we create only a mirror, ppl will commit on github but never will move. The point will be quite the same : we support Github, Microsoft behind it, which supports itself US Government. Today, being on Github is just supporting what the US government did and does to ppl who are not in "Friend" countries of the USA or disagree with USA.

Forbodding Angel lives in CANADA as far as I know and this country has quite the same rules than USA about internet (5-eyes...).

What we could do, because we have really different point of view, is doing a poll, if still everyone here agrees to do that. Democracy is still the best way to decide whether we move or not

What I did was to stop actively participating on Github about 6 months ago, most of which was related to Springlobby. As a result, there now lies a repository on framagit that is ~35 commits ahead of the springlobby/springlobby one on Github.

Be the change you want to see in others.
