the right name of that type of music is chiptune, not every chiptune is 8-bit.

one idea:

why not make the watermark, the special structure.
This structure would work in that way: When a enemy unit get near the radius of that structure the enemy will be visible an amount of seconds.

I think it in with the theme of the game. I would prefer something more related to computer. maybe a faction related to computer graphics.

zwzsg one question: you said that idea of the kernel panic is to be a simple mod, in a future (or far future) kernel panic will have many simple factions instead of just 3, or this will make the game complex (even with simple factions)???

About the semi-realistic: The spring 1944 is a ww2 themed rts and not a mod that make changes in xta (or ba) changing the things that are unrealistic in the game based on scientific rules. In the connection unit when you press alt when dispaching units, he will dispach until the you run out of units to dispach, why not add another button that make the connection dispach units until you release the button??
