Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
Can or can`t? Because if its can┬┤t its right. If its can, its wrong. In that case you tell mutliple storys, or, if you dont get into that sort of trouble to adjust the story towards the choices of the player (which becomes a rather complicated power of two (good times evil) construct if you dont r...

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
I disagree, you can leave them freedom, go wherever you want within the pipe, but every game that leaves moar then that, sucks when it comes to telling the story. You need a controll over the pacing at some points. Yes, you do. You can't tell a story without controlling the order in which the playe...

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
Face it - for a good story to be told tense, you need linear action -or otherwise, a sandbox and a titanic team. Everything else is just a standarbattle in disguise. Game narrative is a sequence of obstacles. Although railroads are the easiest way of ensuring the players don't bypass the sequence, ...

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
P.s. Gunmetal was MADE for missions. But it uses a horizontal C shape with that as the guiding symmetrical line. Yet even with the larger symetry I then did decidedly asymmetrical features and map details. I see what you're saying, the topology of it is more subtle than it appears at first. I reall...

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
So you mean that "just because its only a tutorial, it has no need to be catchy, driving?" and the walls are there, so that the player can decide when to push forward and when to retreat, else its all about triggers going happy, and good luck with player stepping on the right square in op...

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that. These missions are to important to me, to allow you to jepardize them. Why reuse Multiplayermaps for singleplayer experiences? A Singleplayer is a chain of events, therefore nearly all singleplayer levels wherever you go follow the diggestive system, one...

Re: Is there even want of maps anymore?
What would you guys consider the "Best Maps Nobody Plays"? I'm picking up my single-player campaign project again, and I would like to use some maps that aren't in the general mix. I was figuring on using multi-player maps and back-fitting my missions into those rather than building maps f...

Re: Considering a personal project
One of the things I've been thinking is that it may be most effective to incorporate as much as possible into "invisible units". Partly because this was how we frequently did it in the MMO's I worked on, so much of the behavior and logic for quests had to be attached to an NPC/Mobile, it m...

Re: Considering a personal project
Traditionally, AI in single-player games cheats. In fact, we refer to it as "artificial stupidity", its job is to force the player to figure out how to make it look stupid (and therefore feel smarter). I don't need AI smart enough to stand in for a human player, just smart enough to march ...

Considering a personal project
I was here a few years ago, and happened across some word on Spring and dropped by again to check out how things have gone. On the technical side, you guys have done fantastic things, the Spring Downloader is a brilliant piece of work, and the engine itself performs like a dream. Balanced Annihilati...

Atari is holding a fire sale on a lot of their IP, similar to what happened to 3D0 a few years ago, and there's a rumor making the rounds in the development community that Westwood is interested in Total Annihilation. Some of my friends passed it to me because they know I loved TA. To Atari TA is ju...

Okay, where to start? 1) Forget SupCom and the rumored sale of the TA universe to Westwood, they are irrelevant to what you're doing here. Watch what they do for ideas like you would any other RTS franchise, but don't get your underwear in a twist over it. 2) Stability and ease of use are all import...

Obviously this has been discussed before, but the advantage of a ranking system for people who are not at the top of the ladder is not wasting time getting hammered by someone far better than they are when that isn't what they are looking for. I played OTA on the TEN matchmaking network, where I gen...
