Alas, I spoke too soon.. When launching the game (still on 64 bit vista), an error popup showed up saying that some hex ip could not be resolved in dns .. or something like that. I agree that the CPU frequency numbers are insufficient. The applet approach seems a lot more useful to me than dry numbers. I've been wanting to upgrade to 0.95b from unknown-files for a couple of days, but the file I get has same modification date (29/12/06) as the 0.94b I'm running already. I've been running springie for a few days and it generally works really well. I noticed today, however, that the CPU consumption of the hosting spring process went to 99% (and stayed there) after I enabled the spring window (from the springie menu bar) and disabled it again.
