Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

I don't see any mention of which GPL version spring uses, there's a copy of the v2 in the SVN but I don't see any notices in the files about which version they can be released under. That makes it GPLv2... it suffices if the whole repository or work is licensed as whole. Committing GPLv3 engine cod...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

According to what we've read, even if all of these arguments were correct, I'd only be in violation if I distro'd Spring itself with my game. So, as a Spring contributor... I could (theoretically, mind ye- I do not actually want to) sue you, for copyright violations and damages... if I accept your ...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

I guess I can consider and disprove another n wrong theories about API calls in LUA being different because of $random_argument, it will just result in the next thing coming up. If the last ones that Argh specifically brought up were correct, so be it - I'm already sure I'll have a hard part explain...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

From GPL, V. 3. [...] I wished this was an option, but Spring is licensed GPLv2, not GPLv2 or newer . See for yourself in the Spring license . If I accepted your argument at face value, then everything in Linux is ultimately GPL, because it no doubt needs to interact with the OS at some level. That...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

Copyright law, by default, allows use. Two comments: You can actually restrict this default further, not just expand, if you do it at the point where the rights to a copy is granted. Lets continue... If the GPL is voided you can still install and run a GPLed program without being infringing If a li...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

We do not need to exacerbate the problem Again, apologies - I tried to make it easier to understand, it didn't work out... @Argh: You refer to this , I guess, and that it states: If the program dynamically links plug-ins, and they make function calls to each other and share data structures, we beli...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

But that's the point I've been attempting drive home here. Most Lua scripts do NOT "combine" with anything else. They don't share anything except what is provided to them through the API itself. That API thing is a dead give-away though. It's a "combination" (Warning: Not legal ...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

Use is not derivation. I'm sorry. I had hoped that me saying "your stuff uses" (as opposed to "you use") makes it clear that uses of the likes of derivation, modification, or combination (as opposed to aggregation) are meant. @Argh: Yes, I was aware that you had trouble, and I'm...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

The FSF can't sue. They however provide legal assistance to copyright holders who want to sue over the GPL, which makes it easier to sue. And yes, you may put yourself at risk... any individual's code is copyrighted to them. They could each sue you over their code, as without the GPL, you have no ri...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

Because that's all we're doing- using bytecode that just happens to have a particular effect when Spring reads it, or passing arguments to internal functions, through an API layer. Doesn't work - the infectious clause in the GPL is in place EXACTLY so you can't introduce a layer to make something d...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

A change of license for the engine is in order, and this discussion no longer belongs in the realm of content creators. No, actually it does, as it would make just as much -if not more- sense to simply comply. You may also not be likely to get a different license, as Upspring didn't take off, among...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

except that GPL is hard to follow it is one of the worst legal documents that I have ever read. I disagree. Compare to the Win XP one (with annotations), or the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license. The GPL really is one of the most readable licenses, and one of the most w...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

GPL won't reign in the assholes anyway, the assholes are willing to just rip stuff from commercial games so no license would stop them. true, after all a license is only a request until you enforce it. Both of you at least expressed this the wrong way around. The license isn't what "stops"...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

Comparing sharealike licensing to anti-slavery laws. You been taking AF lessons or something? Yes, I'm overdramatizing intentionally... *edits* people do not NEED licenses. Sure some people are assholes and will take but they will not get further help. Most people reciprocate. I wish. But they in r...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

People like sharing out of generosity, they do NOT like sharing out of legal requirements. Of course its good to allow them to have arbitrary legal requirements (AKA "proprietary" licenses), because it is much more something generous people will like, and that helps us! We however can't h...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

Example 1: i make some models and textures for my spring mod. i decide that i do not want to share these (for whatever reason, its not important) with other mod makers. i do not want them edited in any way, or used in any mod other than my own. The IP of these models and textures is mine to share (...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

I see why the conditions of the GPL needed to be confirmed and explained. I however do not (so far) see why it'd even be remotely desirable to offer a significantly different license, such as the LGPL. Is it the intent of this project to create and share something cool as community? Or is it to allo...

Re: FSF stance on GPL issues.

That's an interesting thought, actually. I think it's fair to say that a case could be made that all violations occur between end-users and Spring's developers, in that case. No, any modification made by a single entity (organization, user) to source code does not have relevance with the GPL until ...

Re: Planning for 0.77 Release

No offense but i think everyone gets fedup of that answer. Not that many people know how to do so you know. As goes for the vast majority (not AF), they did nothing for the people they are asking a favor from. If you walked up to a lumberjack and asked him to cut a tree in your backyard for free, y...
