Thank you for the replies. Joining an ongoing game on a server caused the game to get downloaded.
Definitely not the easiest system in the world to set up, but it looks like I'm good to go.

Thank you for the links. I went to http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/getdeb_games/trusty/games/getdeb/springlobby , downloaded and installed a DEB file from there, and now Spring Lobby opens without any errors or messages.
