Thanks for the help. A quick downgrade to the stable repo version of zlib 1.2.3 fixed the problem.

My install of spring (85.0) from the Debian repo won't access the mods that rapid-spring (0.5.1) downloads. These include the latest Conflict Terra, NOTA, and Spring 1944.
