Map formats
Currently (spring version 0.76b1) spring supports 2 map formats:
- SMF format is older and most maps are still in that format.
- SM3 is a newer and a better format, but there's not so many maps available yet in this format.
As a player, you don't need to care about formats, but if you want to make maps yourself, you need to choose.
Download maps
All spring maps can be found on Spring-Portal. There, you can either browse the map list, or just click "Search Document" and search the maps section.

Install maps
Maps are either .sd7 or .sdz files. You just need to download them, and put them into C:\Program Files\Spring\maps\ on windows, or ~/.spring/maps/ on linux. If you don't use the default directories, you can also figure out where to put them. Do not try to unpack the files, the game might not see them then.
If you are already in battleroom, TASClient has a 'reload map list' button that you can press, so you don't need to quit/rejoin at all.
After getting a new map, next time when you start TASclient, it will cache some information about the new maps, and it takes some time. For the same reason, the next time you run spring itself, it's going to spend some time to update it's maplist. And finally, when you actually play a new map the first time, spring caches pathing information for that map, and this will take some time.

Making Maps
TIPS:
A useful tip, on almost every map in a 1v1 you will start opposite your opponent unless you choose your position. this is because random order simply randomly distributes players at the default start points which in almost every map are opposite each other. One exception that I know of is flooded desert where you both start on the left hand island.
