And my mom too.
I just (and finally) got Ubuntu edgy installed. No problems at all. Beryl is BEAUTIFUL, and my cheap GeForce 6800 is having NO problems whatsoever handling a couple 3d games on the 'Cube desktop.
I got OpenGL, WINE, and everything I need.
EYE HEART LINUX!

You're lucky you don't have ATI.

ubuntu fails miserably at 8800 card, and its a pain to get working in a virual machine. It also spends ages doing things on the hardrive spending 100% cpu time on my laptop trying to open package managers or open office and everything stuck till the battery runs out.

perhaps you're doing something wrong?

I'm not the onyl person with these issues. ubuntu has no 8800 drivers in its install CD, they use 24bit colour depth when virtual PC 2004 only support upto 16bit, and I dont know why it does the hardrive thing on my laptop (install ubuntu, login, run open office, watch laptop spend ages whirring the harddrive)

Ubuntu is fail, seems rather silly to try and load the OS off a livecd just to install.

Then just get the alternate install CD over the LiveCD. The liveCD is designed to be non-imposing on the novice users and you give simple GUI environment and applications to work with. It also allows a chance for new users test drive different OSs. The alternate install CD offers a traditional text install and an OEM install if you already know what you want and how to install.

Have you set your X configs up right? I have no idea how that works under ubuntu but there should be a way to set your X resolution and bpp the way you want.

Question, guys:
What's the easiest way to get Spring to run on Ubuntu?
Better question, do the OpenGL FX still work?!
Thanks!

I, too, dislike gnome, bah! Still, i am sticking with gnome for a while, i'm using it right now as i write this, Ubuntu.
Still, funny thing though, the most enjoyable desktop i have ever use, was the Java Desktop Enviroment(?), the one that comes with Solaris 10 (unix), which, odly enough, is gnome, hahaha. On the other hand, Solaris, i couldn't use shit of it, too diferent from Linux, no network card drivers functioning=no Internet to help solve the problems, bah. Better leave Solaris for Sun Microsistem computers with full compatibility.

For the 8800 I think you need the latest drivers which doesn't come standard with ubuntu (I think). Go to the ubuntu howto forum which should have clear instructions on how to install even at text console.

i recommend updating nvidia drivers on ubuntu... it fixes cursor flickering and other little annoyances too
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
i can give quick installation quide:
1.save file to your home (under user's name folder)
2.press ctrl, alt, F1
3.write sudo su (then root's password)
4.write killall gdm
5.write sh NV (then press tabulator so it takes the name of the file) if the full name came there just press enter
6.follow instructions and if something goes wrong dont blame me :D
7.write gdm
8.press ctrl, alt, backspace
9.after this u should see cool nvidia logo
