I need tips for texturing...

Seriously bad, I do...

I know experience is most important (probably as important as raw skillz) but I lack both and I need some tips...

UV mapping is pretty easy, so I don't worry too much about it, but I am doing it the way everybody else does it (actually mapping, then texturing...)

Still though, I'm getting better and better, but I still need some tips...

Do some searching on specific texture turorials.

Tons of tuts have been made for any material you can name for use in Counterstrike just to name one.

search for skin tutorial, texture tutorials, or try listing them as the actual material you want to do.

search "metal texture tutorial" as an example.

Might take a bit of sifting, but you're bound to find tons of helpfull info.

The best tip you I can give you is... Dont ask me any tips about texturizing! You will regret! :P

You can have a look at one of my PSD files how I'm doing things. I use custom patterns quite a lot to quickly apply textures or use other patterns for certain stuff and so on... they're probably not included in the project file.

Here's the WIP texture of some tank...

Nice skin, if I could do that, I wouldn't need any tips, lol

Thanks for the suggestion Mr. D

I tried searching yesterday, but about an hour of wasted time yielded no helpful info, I'll try to be even more specific...

edit: Oh damn, being specific (Like, I dunno, "Metal texture tutorial") led me to a useful metal texture tutorial, its for photoshop, but gimp is its mimic, so I need not worry...

Do some painting tutorials, textures are basically paintings that get wrapped around stuff.

It's entirely possible without any painting skills though.

But if you wanna em to be 100% yours you must make the fancy painting too right?

Yes but not pretty.

What exactly do you mean by painting... I don't draw much by hand, except for some greebles here and there. I'm lazy you know.

Taking the brush tool and painting. A good texture needs that, filters alone don't make a texture. Filters help a bit adding subtle structure but that's it, 95% of what you see in a game is hand painted.

This strongly depends on what to skin.

I mean if all I need is to slab some premade textures on or apply shading, then I don't neccessarily need to draw anything besides some greebles. Well I always end up with 100+ layers so I guess I'm doing it wrong... :P

Maybe a wall texture can get away with a retouched photo but everything else needs painting to look good.

Looks pretty good to me. Maybe you should be giving me some tips...I'm still stuck as hell. :?

I think it looks badly designed. Leaving aside the lack of shading the texture doesn't seem fitting for either the specific surface (e.g. metal tiles just repeating for no reason and having no details that would be appropriate like air intakes or something) or the object as a whole (planes are lightweight, wings are aerodynamic, your wings are solid metal blocks with HUGE screws stuck in them).

Badly designed, of course, what would you expect from a newb like me

The screws are a wee bit too large, I didn't want the plates to be... Sooo, thick lookin, lol

Well, I might as well continue texturing everything I can, that way I can get more experience and knowledge, then I can come back to my old stuff...

Thanks for the help so far.. :-)

Edit: BTW, the render that I put in my Avatar looks like the second or best one I've ever made 8)

You'll want to make the wings thinner on the mesh, then look at pictures of real planes. Usually the welding seams are very subtle (for subtle lines use a very thin brush at low opacity) and screws aren't used in the hull at all.

This is what I currently work on and I didn't drawn much of the texture by hand. It's not the final thing of course, gonna have to put way more (handdrawn :P) detail on to make it look good.
