black screen after loading as soon as game starts

Right, i have no idea wtf is going on, as the last dev version prior to release works fine, but 0.73 doesn't.
here's how it goes.
start game, i load, get in , draw screen and so on.
Soon as the game begins my screen goes black
The game is playing as i can hear sounds of other people, units in the combat tests etc. I cannot exit with shift-esc, and have to kill spring via task manager to get out.
This happens in both spring test and multiplayer games, and i've tried every possible combination of graphics options and resolution settings.
I have the latest Nvidia drivers for my 7800GS and i can't roll them back because I had to install them to get openGL support.
I've re-set registry settings in the client also (i had to to join games in the new client), and i just tried a clean spring install also.
Nothing i've done seems to make any difference
