That damn upspring....

Does UpSpring hate me? I have tried a lot and looked through maestro's tut, but nothing helps... If i try to save a model as .s30 or anything, it says that it doesn't know what format .tga or .dds is...

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I just wanna see them in the game

that sounds a bit vague. is the probelm in upspring or in spring itself?

basic process is:
load model (xxxxx.obj)
assign the part a name
with the object selected you import other .objs as daughters
don't rotate or mirror them...i found that it didn't work.
assign the model a radius, height and centre (otherwise it won't appear in spring)
show it your textures...
save as .s3o, but remember to put the .s3o at the end of the filename too

and it's an s3o not s30

Prob was in actual upspring itself...

Normally, I might need to move, but no rotate or mirroring..

I'll try, and if it works, I'll take a pic of it...

Move? Why? If you do it properly in wings before you can save yourself the time of doing it in Upspring. Speaking of which, I'd write down the previous coordinates and set the origins manually by punching in values in until they match, then restoring the old positioning. That way your model will stay the way it's supposed to be.

It's a shame that origins are reset if you replace a child with some other model or itself to save time of doing things twice over and over again :P

Does Upspring support sub-object editing, or do I have to import every single separate piece of the model?

technically it does but i've found that anything apart from moving and scaling does very strange things to the objects (eg inverting the faces and warping the overall shape).
it's best to make all your parts in wings fully before importing (this can still be done with copying other already UVmapped parts and transforming them across the x axis & inverting, rotating or whatever is required. it saves a lot of faffing about in upspring...)

hmmm..... maybe I should include the *.3ds or some other format of my files so they can be "altered" without TOO much effort... :?

didn't realize upspring did that to models.. I've never used upspring directly for model editing.. :P

it's a known problem yes.. but i'm working on it again.

Hmm, thanks for the clarification, guess I have my work cut out for me even after finishing the texxing...

Thanks, it would be a very great help for more complex models. :-)

this is what it looks like, incase you get it, snipa:
Image
the nearside is inverted so you can only see the textures on the faces from the 'inside'
also the rotation/location on the back hoverpad thingy was way off (from where i'd left it  )

Hmmm interesting, just need to shove the unit in a mod now :P

When I mirror parts of the model I select them and use Object -> Invert All Face Normals.

A much funnier effect was when Upspring decided to turn my tank on its head for some reason.

did you manage to get it to work in upspring? perhaps it's a problem with *my* upspring then...
