Lightning Weapons

Ive seen recently that Laser weapons have been getting a update in appearance and some othe effects for them.. What I want to know is where is my lightning effect loving.. currently none of the tags for lasers work on lightning.. I cant resize it, I cant make more bolt things, and it could definately use a ball burst thing at the beginning like the lasers are getting..

Also it seems to not use groundflashes or stuff generated in the explosion generator currently.. basically I want some lightning weapon loving cause lightning is a weapon too and it deserves to be damn cool looking..

A slow bolt of lightning would be insane-o cool. As in when you fire it, it would send out a lightning bolt that will fork out and create that nice ripping effect.
Maybe that could be defined with a fractal?

... and not even necessary. The new weapons code coming will allow us to use animated bitmaps... we can do really fancy stuff then ;)

^By bitmaps he means any bitfeild generated image, rather than the *.bmp format.

OK, heres my two cents. Effects don't need to be syncronised. At all. So fractal defined lightning would work. Just separate the visual from the gameplay and there you go.

A problem with that would be that you'd still have hardcoded "this is lightning" behaviour instead of "this is a beam weapon that does its damage on the impact frame". A railgun would behave the same as lightning but you couldn't make the lightning look like a railgun shot.
