This is my first map with my custom winter climate for l3dt. Starts for as much as 5 people, while I would reccommend 4 vs 4, 5 vs 5 is possible.

Start positions are randomized and 1 and 2 starts are set up for random starts on 1 vs 1.

I really like the height scaling on this- not ridiculous mountains, not too flat, and very detailed. The lighting, however, feels off. Needs stronger yellow, and it just doesn't have that bright, blinding feel of snow on a bright day. Considering the angle of the sun, based on the shadows, I'd expect things to be much brighter, with sharper contrast and much darker, bluer shadows.

The problem with making the snow "realistically" bright that it hurts the eyes when playing for a while...

^^

exactly. I chose a pretty happy medium.

here's what you do then, your sky box is a crisp night sky with a very bright aurora borealis ("northern lights") effect seen on the "horizon", that way your current lighting would fit properly (might need to be a little darker...)

I really like this idea...

Or lower the angle of the sun... or really increase the number of cloudpuffs (I know zip about making maps right now, so this is just random garbage- I'll make a map or three when I'm done with the current build of NanoBlobs).

I'm not for "Snowblind, the Map"... I just want the light to not feel so... washed out and bleary- even a wee bit more yellow in the light, and darker, bluer ambient would make a big difference, without lightening it any. That said, it's still a neat map, and I'll try playing NanoBlobs with it tonight while testing AF's new NTAI.

It's a very good looking snow map, a tiny bit more rock showing might be even better. Wow I can almost hear that snow scrunch underfoot!

Heh, thanks guys. I could lighten it a bit, wouldn't be hard, however, the lighter it gets the more detail you lose in a snow type of map, generally. By detail I mean natural shadows etc. I dunno, I'll do a little experimentation.

I wanted to add a skybox so bad that was perfect for this map, however, there are exactly 0 tutorials that I could find, and I need something like that spelled out to me by the letter.

I also wanted to add features soo sooooo bad, but I have nada winter/ice features :(

While smoth breaks his back for me, he has a hell of a lot on his plate and I'm not gonna push him for more.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I sort of agree with you choc. If I had it my way it would be totally white (with variation), however, you remember the first version of canyons I released? Maybe you should go read the thread.

That's why it looks the way it does. I chose an easy on the eyes happy medium. Plus, I like it :D

Edit: Noize, I uploaded it a long time ago...

yes i remember that hurting eyes topic, however if you take for instance the new noize's cold place remake , its increadibly more white than yours and then standart snow maps and i still like it a lot, despite some dificulties at glancing the minimap or so. (and typing ingame, lol)

meh ok, you win. I'll whiten the texture up a bit for my next snow map.
