Space Battles.....can they be done

Hey all
Now, I know that "true" 3D space battles like in Homeworld cannot be done, but - is it possible to make a space battle similar to in Empire at War, treating the spacecraft as aircraft and having a "black" floor which looks like space
Is this doable, and if so has anyone done it before? Thanks

naah, i thought it was a idea thread, but the guy is serious- how boring.. good luck with your project.
something is wrong with spring, we do not attract those nubs anymoar, who poast there ideas. Starving troll starves, making sounds like the prisoners in dungeon keeper.

This is debatable. You can do 3d space with gunships and modification of their flight attributes (mainly cruise alt). This would get you something which is 3D.
For a more dependable 3D system you could use movectrl, customise a camera and create a 3D positioning widget. All these things are possible and may well be easier than writing your own engine from scratch. Spring does a lot more than movement.

The problem with real "3dstrategy" is that you can not controll itwell.
You need to rewrite the controlls completely, into something photoshop like, in which you can paint 3dformations of spaceships in layers , and then move this 3dimensional picture from first person.

flotilla is turn based - but my concept would work out with rts, as long as you have enough prepainted 3dformations up your sleeve.

We should make a Homeworld-esque mod, because Homeworld was the best RTS ever (even better than Total Annihilation, even), but we should start with just a 2d plane with ships as aircrafts* then work on the 3d bits later.
*you can also make them ships and make it voidwater map :D

The homeworld models are floating around as OBJs ( or exportable from native format ) so if you want to go grab them and dont care about IP....

As has been pointed out, THIS is already a 2d plane space mod on a voidwater map.
