You can join one of the many free pods now, and joindiaspora.com has been giving out invites for ages. Google+ is shiny. That's all it has.

I asked for a Diaspora invite like a year ago. Still have yet to receive one. Also, I don't like the pod system. Much too difficult for computer nubs. Google+ is the right balance. It's the central server, but the ability to split people into groups, etc etc. plus, lolandroid app :-)

Some friends are in, but I haven't heard anything useful yet.

Google+ works, and it works a damn sight better than facebook

That and they don't have the same vested interest to make money from your personal data by selling it with adverts to other companies like facebook.

( does the fact that the diaspora site has a twitter link in its header not say it all? )

What's your google account? I'll mention you in a post on there, you should be able to get in via the notification but it's throttled so you would have to keep checking back to see if they'd opened it up yet

So you haven't seen Jobs and Gates on Google+ joking about Apple+ and Bing++? ( Someone found Zuckerberg but he's not posted anything and only put up an awful photo )

This.

The biggest problem with facebook is that I don't trust them anymore. Too many sneaky breaches to my personal data, from which they only backtrace once it is revealed and there's a public outcry.

I would like to have a google+ invite too.

Tell me again what Google business model is, and how do they make money!

All companies strive to make money, but google has a better track record of respecting people. But you are right, I already have almost all my online stuff vested with google (gmail, picasa etc...), it is a risk to not diversify, but I still trust google a bit more.

Facebook needs to make money from your data to survive, google does not. Google+ is yet another moat around their castle of search, just like Android or youtube, which I doubt will ever turn a profit.

google makes money with your data.
they do it with all their services.

how would you argue about this service being an exception?

Google doesn't try to make money form your personal data. That is the difference. Google tries to target you with relevant ads based upon your past searches. Something they do quite well, and that is the main reason they are the giant that they are.

Unlike facebook, google doesn't turn around and sell everythign about you to the highest bidder. I would actually feel comfortable putting personal details on google+, such as my phone numbers, email address, and so forth.

I hate facebook, and look forward to the day when I can ditch it forever.
