You should have asked me about the German Spring Logo! I'd have made you a big pretty banner! Saves you having to make a nonstandard one hemmed in at the side

lol, seriously, where is the problem? I only made this page because i wanted to promote and advertise the spring engine to get more players :) Why does google / facebook etc. have a non-english translation? Because they get more visitors with that than only having english sites :D

problem with non-english spring sites is that they mostly consists of stuff someone (often badly) translated in 2007 and thus its often outdated or wrong. (see german pages on spring wiki, spring pages on all the sites that host spring downloads ie heise.de or chip.de)
Same with forum, playerbase is not big enough for multiple forums and engine devs or game makers post mostly only here too.

Yeah i know some people have hard time reading english, but do they really need own website just because they want to see german download link text? i mean.. most users just download the game, looks some screenshots etc.

Yes, i do think that. Why shouldnt we...? Do you know that english is the language used to communicate between all countries on the world? Or do you think we should all speak with our own languages and ignore if others wont understand us? Funnily enough, that actually happens when i go play with german people: they keep talking to me in german, even when i speak english: they read my english but reply in german!! (i used google translator to check what they said).

First of all, your attitude is pissing me off, because i hear that fear from many german speakers; they seem to think that learning english will make their own language less worth, and thus learning english is unpatriotic and should be avoided at all costs. No, its not unpatriotic, get over it and accept that english is the universal language.

Secondly, learning a universal language, which is english, doesnt mean it will kill every other language and create one world state with its own law. The law and language doesnt mean the same thing.

The problem is to create 300 other websites for every other languages. As you should know that german and english arent the only languages on the world. Now think if we had 300 different websites for promoting Spring, they all would have outdated information somewhere, it would generally be a mess and only a source of problems for the players. Sure you now think: we dont need own website for SMALL languages with LESS speakers than GERMAN, but then again, didnt you say a while ago that we should embrace every language, instead of just one...

They have translated versions for people who are inable to read english. Those are mostly used by children or seniors who havent had the chance to learn english well enough yet. But luckily the future is better since english is taught in schools all over the world at young age (i hope so).

Lastly, who will this multilingual website actually help in the end? NOBODY. If some german guy decides to make a game for Spring, he will just think: hell, i will just write everything in my language! fuck english! im too lazy to write everything twice! And nobody else except germans can play the mod properly. This is a huge problem on the internet, because i find such projects every now and then: they believe that only their own language speakers will use their project. The worst of all is asian guys: its sometimes impossible to even find out which buttons to use in the game, and all the filenames are super mess because i cant display asian letters.

Now think again... is that really what we want? Do we need more problems? And, speaking of problems... i find it annoying to read in my own language if the website is universal; for example youtube. There are dozens of problems: 1) some of the translations are not done yet: you see two languages mixed in one page. 2) you will need to learn two different keywords for everything: it will be much slower to find the important links to be able to go where i want, because there are no standard words for example "uploads" (which is horribly translated into Finnish and makes no sense at all), 3) every page has its own way of translating.

Finally, the point is, it is much more efficient to learn english and use only english on the internet.

Also, note that if we really need a website for other languages than english, then we also need to translate Balanced Annihilation to those languages, and that will never happen for the reasons i listed few paragraphs ago.

Because there's no well known way for English speakers to read diacritics. And many languages arbitrarily choose and assign diacritics to functions that are not unilateral to how they are assigned in other languages.

Basically, for the same reason anyone complains about someone else's language. Lack of knowledge and understanding.

I never controverted the statement that english is the unviersal language. It's good to have one language which everyone can speak (more or less) to communicate with strangers. Also, I am not a patriot if you think that - only during the soccer world championship I am going to fly a german flag Additionally I'm not visiting these regulars' table which are famous in germany etc......


Finally I must say that I really can understand your point. I agree with you in that cases. But i disagree with you that non-english sites dont accelerate the increase of players. For example I talked to some of my friends to show them some games (included BA). They commented them with something like "Oh fuck! This is in english! Don't you have a german version?" and then they play their games with a german interface etc. Facebook and Co are not translated in german only because of seniors. And I dont think that this is only a phenomenon of germans Especially french people refuse to learn english (AFAIK they are learning german first and then they can choose between english and spanish) or any other foreign languages (I was in France some years ago for an exchange because i learned it in school for 5 years and i must they that in contrast to french people germans are very(!) unpatriotic especially beacause of the Hitler period and the National Socialism. But it is also not very fair that all countries are coming with "these Nazis" etc only if you are a lil bit patriotic although we're not very patriotic The link from CarRepairer above is the best example for this. For any other language you will not post these allusions. It seems you're very frightend - But i dont know why ^_^ I dont feel associated with these terrible time far ago. So you also have to archive your preconceptions against germans.

As an American who attempted/forced to learn another language. I find this derail sort of interesting. I tried to learn Spanish, but none of it really stuck. Anyway I find it of interest how people view an anglo-centric internet. I'm curious TM.

See this is one of the reasons i really dig spring's community. It allows people to communicate with individuals with different perspectives. (Something that is lacking where I live.)

How did he know how to answer if he didnt know any english?

And it happens a lot, mostly the germans tell me to learn german when i simply say "english pls" when they spam me with german. I have never seen any Finnish (or any other country) guy saying "learn finnish!!" or "no!" when someone asks politely to speak english. I believe the reason is that germans have much higher ego than finnish people have, actually i have noticed most of the countries around german/french/italy etc, are very similar in their ego.

Some people made a study about that you need to start learning second language before age of 12, because after that age you CANT learn second language PERFECTLY, you will never get it as good as your mother tongue. The older you start learning, the harder it will be, i know this for sure for my own experiences...

Although, if you have no interest on the subject you are learning, then of course, you will not learn. I had this issue on Swedish which is forced upon us in our Finnish schools (not anymore i think). The worst thing was to learn English and Swedish at same time when you have almost no clue about both of the languages XD I never learnt either english nor swedish in any school i was, i just passed the exams and then moved along. Only the internet has forced me to learn english, and made me also motivated to learn english.

"uploads" = "lataukset" = "downloads"
