What is Texture Memory and why should I care about it?

The graphics card only has so much space for textures. If it runs out, things start getting very slow.

Oh ok, because i read it here and there and was not really sure what it was referencing. So it's not like an engine limitation or anything, just a hardware one? Also is that why there are no giant 18 faction games/mods or large maps (large maps being something over the 42x42 range)?

No, thats because that would be a huge amount of work to create.

And because the present map format is unsuited for incredibly large maps.
