Hello,

Well i played a lot of RTS games in my life, and almost in every game(I know every TA based mod isn't like most of rts) BUT, usuailly there's a load screen showing the percentage of load to all ppl. Basiccly it shows u which CPU rocks and which is wooden, but u can implement it to BA for another purpose... so that every player can have fair chance to take a desire spot. In most games ur start spot is pre-defined before the game start. but here is someone has wooden-kind of PC he can't get a spot, so usually newbies get to front get their ass whooped and it ruins the game, also the game could more newb friendly. Also ppl could finnaly choose a desired game spot.
another fix for that let's call it a problem, is that u choose the start point before the game start, like battle for middle earth style or C&C

What do u all think about it?

Yeh, I've been talking to Fatty about this. The current loadscreen data and printed information is ghastly, especially for non-geeks as they don't care about what loads fastest or w/e, they just want in.

I would suggest an option to choose between the current loadscreen data, a progress bar and no loadscreen printed text at all.

For one thing, it makes the pretty loadscreens fugly seeing as it's slap bang in the centre of the screen and it looks all jpgy :cry:


As for start position, a few things could be done about that. Firstly, you could simply use fixed or random positions and allow the autohosts to balance the best players to use the front positions more on average.

Secondly, you could indeed set positions in the lobby.

Thirdly, you could set the game to not allow anybody to place a start position until every player has loaded in.

Need a team-random-start-positions startoption, where players are randomly assigned to the predefined start-points that exist within their start boxes (randomly assigned to the first N, not to every one in the start box - so that if there are 10 start points but 6 players in the start box, they will be randomly distributed into the 6 start points that have the lowest number.

Even better, see CA.

So once everyone's chosen a spot within their startbox, everyone's comm within the team is shuffled with someone else's position.

Dont apologize, you are telling them about a feature they can steal from CA for BA. They should be thaking you for the info.

I like that feature, but it always seemed hackish to me - I mean, why am I picking some other player's start point instead of using the one defined by the map? It's too bad that autohosts and map-defined start-points don't play well together.

I think the best solution would be to figure out a way (perhaps needs an engine change to support) that would delay start-point choice etc until all players have connected... in fact I'm pretty sure you could hack this functionality in with Lua when the "disable auto-place initial units" thing is finished (basically after game start the game is paused and people choose start positions THEN units are placed then game unpauses)

I dont wont to be given a random spot. Load speed is the easiest and a quite fair way of distributing the start points with the minimal amount of fuss.

Have a mini-game of pong in the loadscreen and the winner gets to pick first spot.

everyone would be hovering over the best position and as soon as the last person loads everyone would click the same position at the same time. Picking positions in the lobby sounds like a good idea

I will address both these at once: I don't think this would help anything. Once the start point placement is unlocked then what? Who clicks fastest? Nothing is solved. In the end it comes back to the same issue of teamwork and coordination. Shuffle Within Box at the least is a solution that works.

to be honest, this is only a problem in noob autohost games. if your crankin' dat 8x8 DSD when you can actually play then your doing it wrong

Just don't play with the kind of noobs that see start position choice as a competition. Don't ready until everyone has a start position and as a team you have discussed a little strategy.

On a side note communism (ie shared mex income) makes start positions less important.

I don't think my point was understood - I mean having *no* start point selection. Each player is assigned a start point within their start-box, using the map's pre-defined start positions. Basically, the same as "randomize start positions" but without the extra and unnecessary step of players pickign a start point for other players.

But I think engine limitations prevent that approach.
