Getting started with XTA and Spring in general

Hello. Im a huge fan of TA, its one of my favorite RTS's ever.
Anyway, I downloaded Kernal Panic and Spring in one file, had some fun with that, but i wanted to try a TA mod, and i hear that XTA was good. Ive downloaded pretty much all the TA mods, but i have no maps, all of the games i try to play on are on Kernal Panic maps and it wont let me play anyway.
I guess what im looking for is a tutorial and maps or just some help. Ive been looking all over the springrts site for over an hour now and i cant seem to find anything.
Thank you.

Pretty much. The games, mods and maps are, for the most part, hosted on external sites.

Which version of XTA do you have? Are you playing with people or alone? If you're playing alone, the game won't start with just you because there is no selected AI, you'll need to hit Ctrl+Return to force start, and there won't be anybody to fight. You need a XTA compatible AI... KAI might do the trick?

I think KAI is bundled with the kernel panic installer. Start the kernel panic lobby, switch to single player, and add a bot. I suppose it will be in there. Spring has got a few standard skirmish AI's bundled in it too: RAI, KAIK (the 2 most common ones), and AAI.

you don't need necessarily the lobby, but it's easier.
In the lobby (springlobby), go to single player, select map, mod and ai and start!
Some AIs won't work for some mods, just try out...
have fun, jeykey

Just downloaded and installed spring_0.82.3.exe (first time user).
I'm trying to follow the "Getting Started" instructions, which only says to select the "Commanders" script, but it seems there are no maps or mods with this installation.
A quick look at
http://www.springfiles.com/ reveals far too many choices. Which map/mod combo will work for "Test the Game"? Everything I've tried so far crashes.
It'd be nice if the download included at least one starter map and mod, or at least some instructions for what to get.

Run SpringDownloader, go to the single player tab, and get right into Spring. it will do the rest for you.

XTA has not been updated to be compliant with spring 82.3 yet iirc

I tested this unofficial release with spring 82.2, works fine.
