I hate that word.

What's wrong with making an unpopular statement to spark a discussion? I mean this is what discussion boards (hence the name) are all about.

Furthermore, there's a huge difference between "playing along and having a bit of fun" and "getting trolled". Worse than trolls are people who scream "ur a troll am i cool yet" at every opportunity.

Merely making an unpopular statement isn't trolling. Trolling means to deliberately target an individual or small subset of a forum with a deliberate attempt to provoke nerdrage.

For instance, a statement which is obviously untrue but which a large number of people are mistaken about. Nerds of any type find this kind of misunderstanding profoundly frustrating.

As I am an expert in this form of communication/recreation, I will provide an example. This is trolling:

Stompy: Does anyone watch Machine Super Combat Wars: Placebo Midnight? I just got into it, it's awesome.
Cocky-massive-balls: Please do not discuss pedophilia here.
Stompy: WTF JUST BECAUSE IT'S ANIME DOESN'T MEAN IT'S [continues, 3 pages]
Cocky-massive-balls: I contacted my local sheriff's office and he told me to forward your IP address to the FBI.
Stompy: WTF?! [continues]
Cocky-massive-balls: I hope you get the help you need.

My obscene fantasies aren't as offensive as the word "newfag". You're insulting him, you're insulting gays, you're insulting newbies, and you're insulting me by posting something so horrible in a thread I posted in and thereby associating your obscenity with my good name.

Some people seem to confuse "Flamebaiting" and "Trolling"... The former being posting statements expressly meant to elicit a negative response... trolling is when you try to string someone along and make them expose themselves as an idiot... this can include flamebaiting as well as faining ignorance.

Posting a controversial statement to spark a discussion is called "playing the devils advocate"... it can be used to give a bored troll some nibbles to play out, but it isn't overtly wrong... in fact it will quite often lead to some excellent discussion.

a devil's advocate was originally someone who was appointed to argue the opposing side in a catholic trial or some such... so simply presenting the opposing side in an existing argument for the sake of argument itself... I didn't think it really applied to new arguments being made.

A "devil's advocate" is an invaluable tool to any debate. If you only have people telling you the positives of something, the real "devils" will take advantage of the situation later.

wiki :
During the canonization process of the Roman Catholic Church, the Promoter of the Faith (Latin: Promotor Fidei), popularly known as the Devil's Advocate (Latin: advocatus diaboli), is a canon lawyer appointed by Church authorities to argue against the canonization of the candidate.[1] It is his or her job to take a skeptical view of the candidate's character, to look for holes in the evidence, to argue that any miracles attributed to the candidate were fraudulent, etc. The Devil's advocate opposes God's advocate (Latin: Advocatus Dei; also known as the Promoter of the Cause), whose task is to make the argument in favor of canonization. This task is now performed by the Promoter of Justice (promotor iustitiae), who is in charge of examining how accurate is the inquiry on the saintliness of the candidate.
