Has anyone ever thought of making a Dune mod? That would be really cool.

did it work out and is it still around, assuming someone made it and not just thought about it

Different people made a few models, but none had the will and time to complete anything near like a playable mod.
Have you noticed that link near the top of your screen:
Search. You can write "Dune" there and it will list you every post that used that word in the forum. And if you are too lazy to browse 16 pages of topics to see which are relevant to your interests, don't even mention making a mod.
And just because zwzsg is my name, here is a midly relevant animated .gif of a unit I made four years ago.

are u talking about a spring remake of dune II or about a game that is close to the books ?
i think makin it close to the books would be difficult because Herbert doesnt focus primarily on open warfare in the books so there are not many military units described, when it comes to an open war in the books its more about "uberchars" and their superior abilities in infantry tactics like muaddib, duncan or the great miles teg
of course ornithopters, artillery, lasguns, fremen, sardaukar, nukes, spice harvesters and some more are described and would make some units but i cant remember reading about war machinery like tanks, planes, ships and stuff... it would be close to impossible to design all kind of units without making up units that are not in the books, like they did in dune 2 (not a word about a fraktion called ordos in the books by the way)
another thing to think of is that fighting in the dune universe is very focused on melee weapons (like swords and knives) and (anywhere then in the dune desert) body shields, remember the part in the first book when a squad of fremen fedaykin ambushes and kills a whole squad of sardaukar only using knives
i dont know if the spring engine is good for melee, i dont know a spring game/ mod with melee...
but anyway i love the idea of a game in the dune universe

I think it's safe to assume the OP meant a remake of the RTS game Dune II which defined the genre which we all so love.

books. make laser weapons that hit shields go nuclear meltdown. the books had most of the fighting hand to hand, sneak up and stab, ambushes, ect..

I don't actually remember the book having much in the way of those details - either way, it struck me as unrealistic in the miniseries. I'd stick to projectile weapons as the mainline equipment. Iirc, the Harkonnens were remarkable in their use of lascannons because Dune was the only planet in which shields weren't viable.
dammit, I shouldn't get dragged into this again. We've been over and over this.

In the Butlarian Jihad the holtsmen effect (the fancy name for the sheilds pretty much) is explaned alittle better, since the creator of the sheilds (and most of the other technology in the dune universe) is one of the main characters. There is a part were a sheild is struck with a las gun. The effect is essentialy a nuke.

In the books virtually all fighting is done hand-to-hand because of the prevalence of personal sheilds (which render projectile weapons all-but useless)
yes, lasgun/sheild interations create a nukesized explosion.
the dune 2 model makes for a much better game. and, as i said, rattle is doing it, wait patiently, help or be quiet :)

Those books did not happen. Not Frank Herbert = not Dune.

iirc, it creates it at the firing point as well as the target - the effect feeds back up the laser beam.
Which just means you use a suicide troop to do it alone in the middle of the desert, or a primitive computer (no advanced computers allowed), or something like that.

seems pretty acceptable why are they not doing it?

Because Frank Herbert spent too long thinking about ecology, religion, biology, and Carl Jung to notice the strategic ramifications of his world-building.
Or I may simply be misremembering the "source and target" thing.

I always wondered why they didnt just use a timer. It could be clockwork ffs.
Anyway... The F.Herbert books are more about the socio-political maneuvering, deception, intrigue etc than about the impacts of the implications of lasgun/shield interactions (although the idea of the prolification of personal shields bringing a return to hand-to-hand combat and knife duels is a neat one, and basically what shields are used for as a plot device)

There are more Dune inspired RTS's than just Dune 2. There's also Dune 2000 (which is just Red Alert with different units imo) and Emperor: Battle for Dune (which is built on a 3D engine). Emperor even has a bit of laser/shield interacrtion - if a shielded unit (of which there are a whole of 2 in the game) is hit with a laser (which is also used by only 2 or 3 units, 1 of which also has a shield), both that unit and the one who fired the laser die (no nuke blast though). That game can be a better source of inspiration for a mod - it has better units than Dune 2 imo (for a start, every faction's units are different, the only common things are harvesters, MCVs and carryalls).
