Texturing my wheels using 3dwings

Ok I made my first model and i want to uv it... texturing everything but the wheels is easy but since my wheels are complex i dont know how to uv them.
Here is my model
I try to uv the wheels but it always says this:
A closed surface cannot be mapped. (either divide it into two or more charts, or cut it along some edges)
I dont know what to do

cut it along some edges
Google for UV mapping tutorials, there are plenty.
Also, could a mod move this to A&M?

Pretty good model, but the beveling on the wheels is a complete waste of polys.

Oh noes, those wheels are wasting polis so hardcore it makes my balls hurt. For round stuff, use octotoads in the future. Spring automatically renders 5+ sides as round, so there isn't much point to using the ungodly amount of poli's you are using just for wheels.
P.S., I like the model, it looks really neat.

Octotoads?... Dude no.
8 sided, no bevels.

octotoads are 8 sided... all you have to do is cut the sides off and you have an 8 sided cylinder... that is unless you like being a glutton for punishment and killing verticies on a cylinder.

Or, just do the easy thing and make an 8 SIDE CYLINDER OH NOES. Really tho, is it that hard?

Octotoads are not round and they make horrible wheels. Though the newest version of wings can fix it with Inflate: Cylindrical at 100%.
Good textures? You have to UV map the model and draw them yourself or image google for base images unless you want to do 3DOs... the latter don't need to be unwrapped at all but you miss out on a lot. Upspring itself comes with a TA texture package.

tighten 100%

It's not a perfect cylinder then.

What they said about wasting polys on the wheels is true.
As far as UV mapping it - you need to make some cuts first.
This thread has a tutorial on UV mapping in Wings3d, it's a great tutorial and has helped me out in the past.
As far as wheels, yours would be difficult to UV map nicely, IMO. You want to make sure that the large, visible areas (i.e. the sides) are given plenty of space on the texture and that they will be easy to apply a good texture to. The way you've set up the wheels, the sides (specifically the large, vaguely triangular bits) won't be able to be put on the map in a way that is intuitive to texture - you'll either have to cut along one edge between the large vaguely triangular bits in the wheel well, or keep it circular and have your texture be distorted which is fugly.
As an exercise, try simply UV-mapping and texturing an 8-sided cylinder first, and go from there. A very nice-looking wheel with tire, wheel well, and hub cap can be done with 2 extrudes from an 8-sided cylinder.

I'd map the wheels like a barrel.
projection camera for the side and just make a slice in the cylinder for the tire.
