another feature request!

a dark reign 2 / WC3 style time of day effect
sun moves around as the time changes

at nights unit can have shorter LOS, controllable with a multiplier so some units might not be affected (eg. if they have NVG or IR vision)
some units may be cloaked during darkness like the nightelves in WC3
this could make for interesting ambush tactics where they're set up during the cover of night and then attack in the morning when LOS is restored.

possible with current engine?

Not sure about the visual part but the gameplay effects are easy with Lua.

Moving the sun dynamically is pretty easy IIRC, I once did that for fun.

It won't match with any preshading on the map then though (some maps have that.)

Making it look good at night (= dynamic lighting from explosions etc.) would by far be the hardest part.

CA has a map darkness widget, which darkens (e.g. /luaui darkness .40)

As with all features, that depends on the mod and the mod should be adjusted to fit all of its features.

Stop thinking about every feature as what it would do to BA's balancing. Of course it would be imbalanced, BA is balanced to be as it is, not to have additional features.

Actual I was just calling attention to that fact that sounds kinda fun (just imagine the effects of night in a game before tech 2 :) ) its not like I think it shoudlnt be added... actual, the more features the better :)

IF you make a lua gadget with the day light to night time vise versa every 10 minutes with the sun rotating in the sky and under the map and rising on the other side, even without effect to line of sight, i would so throw this into xta.

As Tobi points out, a map can be preshaded or have a custom skybox created for a specific environment. Ultimately it should as such be up to the map maker if it actually supports night and dary, rather than the end user or the mod maker.
