Lulz. I'd let Sony pay for the suit. They have money to waste, since they haven't churned out a decent console yet, so they obviously aren't investing usefully.

That video was so horrible, I want to stab a Greenpeace activist with a wiimote. Seriously, they went too far there.

Are they for real? I mean.. video game consoles, wth?

Video game consoles are a highly specialized product, produced in relatively small quantities. What about TVs? Each console needs a TV to show the fucking picture, and there are *a lot* more TVs than consoles. I'd even say a TV is more stressing to the environment than a video game console. Greenpeace should get some brains, and learn to try a bit harder.

Oh, and just to clarify, I'm not saying TV's should be banned or anything, just making a better argument to show how damn retarded the first one is.

That was stupid, and consoles doesnt really sound like the biggest treat of the moment... :)

Maybe in Japan. I heard they have ambiental problems here due to the toxic components of computers they throw away... I have never ever heard of someone throwing a console or pc away in Brazil... :)

It may be stupid, but this is more about public awarness rather than a specific equipment. How many people do you know that when a product reaches end of life go to a special center ? How many centers like this are there ?

I am no chemist, but still I think it is not good to throw that big amount of garbage. And if it contains bad substances it is worse. When you see a garbage dump around the city, and you think what will be in 50 years... it is not a nice picture. (ok, maybe Brazil has enough space :p)

To suggest this is a console problem, or to even attempt awarness with a stupid video aimed at consoles is silly. The reason enviromentalists rarely get a useful response is because ALL they ever do is play the DOOM AND GLOOM card. They just fearmonger and that pisses everyone off, because people dont want to think about bad and not good. Im not an expert, but I highly suspect most of the toxic chemicals found in consoles, are also probably commonly found in nearly any and all electronic equipment that uses micro proccessors.. IE, anything from DVD players, to Home Computers.. Not to mention a host of other things..

The video should be more geared towards what you could do with said items when you dispose of them, and less about the portents of doom..

In fact Brazil does :) We have loads and loads of free space to put stuff here, the country is just too big (5th bigger it the world) and we also have like 20% of all water on the planet that humans can drink :)

And I think that as soon as we discover how to fuse everthing into energy we will do so with trash, so problem solved! :)

@Manored: About the energy problem I can't wait until it happens :p. But I doubt there is an easy solution...

@Fanger: For me the fact that we are discussing this is anyhow a good thing. If it would have been about the TV and mobile phones it wouldn't catch attentino. Usually people just read the most stupid/crazy/new/geek headlines. And if you have a bunch of people that don't even think about recycling toxic waste etc, but watch with religiosity every new gadget that comes out, you will not make a dull article about what you could do with the waste processors, but make something stupid/crazy/new/geeky.

I never thrown any computer equipment yet, but if I would have to I have no idea where to.... I will see when my mobile falls apart :D.

The problem with electronic junk is how the West circumvene its own environmental regulations for handling it by 'buying' the right to dump it in the third world (from corrupt governments). So you have a lot of people dying and getting child defects and what not due to toxins in the ground and river water, coming from electronic junk.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZHTWRYXy2gE for example.

The same used to be a big problem with most cellphones, but Greenpeace actually got the major companies to change into 'green' components, mostly because of the fact that GP runs their own labs (with benefactor money) where they develop alternative materials to present to companies.

And that's what really annoys me about Greenpeace. That they do loads and loads of fantastic things, mainly by developing good, environmentally viable alternative materials, and by counselling government bodies in environmental issues, but still their only outward exposure is some dorks chaining themselves to oil tankers, or retarded stuff like this ad.
Yeah sure, some kid is going to strike the PS3 from their wishlist because of a shitty 90s era 3d animation.

So basically, I favour Greenpeace, but they really should hire some proper marketing people.

people who run around stopping tankers and pulling stunts that risk lives of other people and the police every time they intervene.

everything they do is legal and right and if someone tries to stop them its illegal or bad.

also the greenpeace/furrylovers/animalia/peta dicks are always roughly in the age of 15-25.

oh right the greenpeace are developing good, enviroimentally viable alternative materials and councelling goverment bodies in enviroimental issues

instead of vomiting shit could you provide some links of the finnish parliament listening to anarchist dicks , or any other goverment for that matter

Looks like where my second 6600 came from. It looked as if someone used a screwdriver to try and remove my fan.

Well you know, fun is over, lets get rid of that consoles, get out and do some realy nasty stuff to the enviroment. Man if i just imagin all those guys cruising around out of boredom... that would be cooler enviromental damage :)

Hey wait what is that, my flat is nearly empty- just a flat Tv, a Pc and a console. How could that happen ? Lets get out there and buy stuff to fill that space- some furniture made of tropical wood or other enviroment friendlier stuff non Gamers upgrade there Lives with...

Take it easy mate. I'd like to think that my contribution to the discussion was at least coherent enough to qualify as something higher on the ladder than vomited shit.

As for the argument itself, it was Spain's government. They hired Greenpeace people on a consultancy basis to deal with the effects of a drier, hotter climate. However, Google turned up naught on it now, so I can't really pull this card I suppose (being an academic, I prize proper references).

But I think you're kind of the proof of my point (that Greenpeace needs better PR people) Sleksa. The activism (or anarchism, as you see it), is a very very small part of what Greenpeace actually does.

Their main purpose is to do research in areas where corporations and governments don't have the economic ability, or will, to venture.
Siemens is an example of a company who has benefited from Greenpeace research. They adopted alternative materials developed in Greenpeace labs.
Greenpeace are happy, since Siemens heeded their advice, and Siemens are happy since they didn't have to devote money to do the research themselves. Good for the environment, and good for business.

I think that is a very good function of Greenpeace.
