Fragment_program_shadow missing, ATI+Vista

I posted a while ago about missing shadows on Spring, on an ATI x1300 pro video card, running vista... instant fail, so far as I have seen. :(

Anyhow, it's complaint is about missing fragment_program_shadow. I know little about graphics drivers for computers, but I have seen others with working shadows, ATI, and Vista combined on these forums, I think.

I may have installed mah drivers wrong, and this may be the cause. However, all of my other games work fine, so I assume that this is not it.

Any ideas? Can this be solved? :?

Also: A recent glitch (probably with new ATI drivers) is that the GUI, including the mouse and excluding the minimap, dissapears. Units also dissapear, but not buildings... Could be a LUA problem somehow, but it's never happened before, and I have had problems with ATI updates in the past.

The nvidia OpenGL Vista drivers make a mockery of ATI.

ATI vista support of OpenGL is apalling, horrific, horrendous. If the ATI catalyst 8 drivers dont make any dent in this trend upon release then I can foresee that ATI support will continue to give horrific support well into the 2010 period.

Sadly ATI driver release cycles take a very long time to go through compared to nvidia which releases beta drivers every month ontop fo any they rush in for demos.

Summary: Tough luck you should have bought nvidia, your in for a long wait(9 months so far and counting) untill ATI realises that there are programs under windows that actually use OpenGL.

ATI == epic fail

Next video card I buy will be an Nvidia.

Any ideas for the bug with GUI and units dissapearing, though? Probably another video card bug, though if it were, I'd expect more kludge and less dissapearing LUA. Did I mention it also makes shift-escape stop working?

It wont be the card itself at fault but rather the drivers.

The coloured lines and horrendous performance followed by cyan blue ground with no units bug is unique to the ATI Vista catalyst 7.xx series drivers. the 6.xx drivers didnt even have OpenGL hardware support.

That isn't what's happening, though.

This is one of the most random glitches i have ever seen. All that happens is the commander and GUI dissapear. It happens about 2 minutes into a game, so nothing else to test on.

No strange colours, nothing.

It seems to usually happen while placing a large building, or selecting the commander.

At one point, after everything dissapeared, the commander was still selected. And, while he was still selected, holding down shift made the GUI come back.

I have also noticed errors in the bar thingy of whose name i forget at the top of the screen, related to OTHER open gl extensions, and one lua error at one point.

Turning off lua doesn't help; the time when it reappeared while holding shift was with lua off.

This bug is nonsensical so far as I can see. I'll probably just have to wait to see if the next driver set fixes it... somehow...

Also: no performance change. Stuff just dissapears, but Spring keeps running just fine. Aaaargh. :(

As I said its all driver related. It may not give identical issues on different cards but they're all driver related, how else do you explain that these issues only arise using ATI cards under Vista with the catalyst 7.xx drivers?

They dont. I still have no shadows on my 7900GT under Vista64 :(

Actually if you look at what he's saying you'll find that no shadows is not what he was complaining about.

They're 2 completely different sets of issues, I should know I have a machine with an ATI gpu and one with an nvidia gpu both running vista, one even has Vista 64, and I've tried vista 32 and ubuntu 7

http://www.nvidia.com

Go report your bug to the nvidia Vista driver team using their feedback form. Please stop pestering everyone and trying to derail threads over a driver bug as if its our fault here. There's nothing we can do about it short of rewriting the shadows using a different method which isn't going to happen.

I think you misunderstood something... There is no need to feel offended.

Hrm...

The issues are unconnected, as the shadows have never worked, and the GUI crap is only recent.

The reason I am dubious about the GUI stuff is because things like holding down shift should not fix driver errors... But hey, they are ATI, so random epic fail such as this is to be expected.

Funny that shadows wouldn't work on an Nvidia card. I wonder if this could have anything to do with a bad driver install... I'm tempted to find a driver remover utility and reinstall my drivers. Probably useless, but hey, worth a shot.

Anyhow, I'll just wait till the next driver release, and possibly complain at ATI. :(

I have this hilarious driver failure on my new machine, cracks me up every time.

While doing a queued order on a con/commander, all textures on the screen suddenly disappear leaving the sky colour and the base ground texture. Units disappear, but nano-spray and the drawn footprint boxes remain.

Textures can be regained by selecting a some random a factory or other con, and pressing shift again.

My GPU is a HD2600pro so I have just assumed its some sort of prank by ATI on vista users.

No, it's some sort of epicfail by ATI on vista users.

:(

Amusing in a... sad way.

I wouldn't mind so much if it was just because they were early dev drivers.... But they've been at it like this for seven months now.

Same here, Catalyst 7.10 with X1650XT on Vista Business 32Bit

Seems to be fixed in Catalyst 7.12, but now i've got a HD3870 on Vista Business 32Bit
