looking for some replacement bitmaps

I just compiled a list of what I figured out more then half a year ago about the bitmaps; There are some bitmaps with dubious source (internet, ripped from game).

The bitmaps with dubious source (from internet/ripped from game) are: So if you're up for a small contribution to Spring go ahead and remake one of those from scratch and release it under GPL or public domain.

Also if you know more about some bitmaps / think the list is wrong make a post here.

iirc smoth or someone else from over in his forums built a few textures that changed the look of the trees which may be useful here, but I'm not sure whether we'd be able to use them or if they're creative commons or not.

Argh may have a foam texture, I'm unsure.

And I know you modders out there have plenty fo potential repalcements for explo.bmp/tga/fade.tga

Well, I'll consider it. I am a fairly decent (for rts/spring quality) texture artist now. So, I may make a few textures and drop them off here.

Edit: So, I am guessing you would want more smoke and stuff in the background compared to this, right?

No problem if so, or if not.

(to others) Also note, do not use that bitmap without my acknowledgement and permission.

Stuff like leaves and bark can be ripped from Wikimedia commons. Look for either the CC ones or even public domain.

EDIT: A Creative Commons search is even better.

For example:

A page of leaves.

Mix of CC, Public Domain, and GNU FDL.

Hooray contribution! Following on REVENGE's tip, I pulled source material from Creative Commons (License info on the originals below) and pixel-slinged 'em into shape.

For now, I'm leaving the explosions, since I'm sure there are better versions out there in the modosphere that someone will be willing to donate to the engine (Pointed look at the modders.)

Those don't look like they'll tile...

I dont think bleaf is ever used. I tried replacing it and loading up a map and saw no difference in the trees that i could recognize.

It's used in AdvTreeGenerator.cpp.

Is that the 3D trees? Or the 2D ones?

Oh lol. I was working on bleaf first, since it doesn't have to tile, and I completely forgot to check that. Well, it means more hand-reworking, but it's not such a difficult fix. I'll do it tonight if I get a chance.

There are some plugins to get you started, and maybe even result in something that is enough. Can't remember any details, though.

Take the image. flip it upside down. Paste the original image on top the right way up at 50% alpha.

Making a texture tile isn't as difficult than making it look good as well. I think there were some (non-free) plugins for Photoshop, but ordinary displacement and retouching can work too. It's better to do this on a high resolution one and scale it down though so it's even less obvious.

aGorm knows more about this.

Thanks for the contributions so far, I will look at them in the engine as soon as I have a bit of spare time :-)

Any progress on tiling versions of the bark and foam?

Is GNU FDL compatible with GNU GPL btw?

I now use the following textures in ca (svn)

('cause those textures don't support the alpha channel)

explo (used for burning tress etc.)

heatcloud

both textures replace the explo.tga/explo.bmp
