Has anyone figured out how to carve a shape out of another shape...
ie using a cylinder to carve a cylinder shape out of a cube? Hand modeling this stuff is a pain and I was thinking there has to be an easier more precise way.

you want CSG operations and it appears that wings doesn't have them. (you probably wouldn't like the results anyway, except in the simplest cases.)

I know how. I'll write up a tutorial, give me a few minutes
EDIT: Actually, I think a tutorial for this already exists... one moment...

Both the above should probably prove useful (I often use scale region to vert/line/face commands to align things together and the like - that works well with not-very-complex things. The more complicated it gets though, the more likely you'll just have to eyeball it)
EDIT: It also helps to not listen to Flozi
