Sharp Performance Drop

All of the sudden, my average FPS dropped from about forty or fifty to under ten. I have made no hardware changes, aside from doubling my RAM last week, and at that point there were no issues with it.

Any ideas?

Maybe you connected your ram weakly and it fell off?

Same version before and after the drop?

(as in, I should not read it as previous week's test build ran at 50 fps and most recent test build ran at 10 fps?)

Same version, the RAM is still there, and I just updated my drivers again - no change.

What's that program... hijackthis? Maybe you have some hidden processes running.

Apparently not.

Some boards degrade the FSB with more ram slots in use? Check you mainboard manual. But even if so I don't know if it would be the real problem.

Nah, I only have one slot, I swapped out a 1 GB stick for a 2 GB.

Upgrade drivers, upgrade bios, upgrade firmware, upgrade everything you can.

Make sure it's all tuned used RivaTuner or whatever is appropriate for your card from http://www.guru3d.com

Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard as well!

I am 15 hours into a multi-level test of my RAM, no errors thus far. I played one game yesterday and pulled ~200 FPS with low settings and ~80 FPS with high, so I'm hoping that I've resolved the issue incidentally.

If it only happened once or twice my guess is Automatic Updates or an antivirus scan.

Disabling those programs or switching to Linux will solve your issues. ;)

Those were disabled, and Linux is currently running on other machines.

any chance you're using a lot of luaui widgets? getting rid of them saved about 20 fps for me.

Nah, I've never been fond of most of them, due to the hack-around psuedo-cheating element of such.
